Pre Paid Card?

I've left this really late as it completely slipped my mind until last night.

DS (15) is going to Spain with the school in 3 weeks and needs to take money, preferably on a card. He has a bank account with Metro Bank but I looked last night and it says that you can't use it abroad as he has the 11-15 account. My friend said her daughter used a Revolut card last year in France but a lot of places didn't accept it so we obviously don't want him to end up stuck with a card he can't use!

Has anyone used Revolut? My husband has one but has never actually used it.

Are there any other pre paid cards that are good for spending abroad? Have been looking at the post office one but I don't really have a clue!

Thanks.

Post Office is very easy. You can order it online or get one in a branch. If the latter your local Post Office will get income every time you top it up so if you want to support a small local business it’s a good way of doing it.
The main attraction for me is that you can top it up online but it’s not linked to your bank accounts so it’s more secure. I wouldn’t want my bank account linked to a card held by someone else.

The FX rate will be much better on any specialist card than just withdrawing cash or using your regular bank account overseas.

This isn’t true, the exchange rate on the post office cards is crap.

€200 would cost £179 on that card or £172 if I paid with my chase debit card which like Monzo starling etc uses the Mastercard daily exchange rate

I travelled round Europe last year and used Revolut as my main bank card. No issues whatsoever

Could you enquire about the Nationwide Flex One card?

I think that it can be used abroad and is for young people.

You could ask them how quickly a card could be provided.

For preloaded I'd probably go for a post office card, exchange rate not so great but easy to use and you can top up via app if needed

But what is easier than a standard bank account?

All of Starling, Monzo, Chase, Kroo and probably Revolut can arrive and be set up within a few days without needing to go anywhere, best possible exchange rates without any fees, Kroo pays over 4% interest, Chase pays cashback and you can move money in and out instantly using the app and you just use the card to pay for things or withdraw cash like any other debit card.

I fail to see the point of the more costly Post Office card over those accounts. And it's not even a credit or income issue as there's no requirements unless you apply for an overdraft.
