Anyone’s DC had post concussion syndrome?

My DS (just turned 12) got concussion back in November and suffered with post-concussion symptoms for weeks after- about 6 weeks in total of a constant bad headache, missed lots of school, sports etc. He had an MRI scan and specialist eye test which came back clear. After 6 weeks or so his headaches got much better, but we are now in a situation where every 4/5 weeks he gets another headache that is then severe and constant and lasts a whole week or so.

We have been referred back to the paediatric neurologist, but while we are waiting for that to come through, has anyone else’s child been through something like this? Is it ‘normal’ (though unusual) for headaches to continue for this long after concussion? Do you have any coping mechanisms for it? At the moment there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do to ease the symptoms, once he gets a headache it sticks around for days and nothing touches it. Paracetemol / rest don’t help and Drs don’t prescribe any stronger painkillers for this age group. He’s missed so much school as well as his sport which is a huge part of his life 🙁 So worried we could be continuing like this for months / years / forever.

Would love to hear from anyone whose child has been through something similar and how long it lasted, as well as anything you found helped with symptoms.
Thanks.

I don’t have experience of this with my child but have had lost concussion syndrome myself and had symptoms on and off for at least a couple of years, with a bit of relapse after I had covid. But I haven’t now had any symptoms for a long time and would consider myself recovered, so don’t give up hope! The only thing to do is to take it easy and rest when symptoms flared up. Wishing your son a full recovery soon.

Someone I know had this quite badly and she got fatigue and bad headaches for quite a while after, about a year which is unusual - up to six months is usually when symptoms ease off from memory. But even hers eased off and she was able to resume normal life and studying and dance. She did get some migraine tablets to take for the headaches though. And she found being on screens made it worse. She also had to rest whenever she needed to as she got very tired. Could he take ibuprofen?
