DD 16 has started college and booked a concert for Friday night with friends I’ve never met and live miles away. For
context we are 30 mins from Manchester and concert is 15 mins from Manchester in opposite direction. So 45 mins away. Would u let your child go?

Depends very much on how sensible your 16yo is tbh. At 16 I was going out to clubs and my sister had moved into her own place, but I had friends who weren't allowed to the city in the day by themselves.

PotatoCatkin · 21/03/2024 00:31

Absolutely!

(I have a 16 year old)

Helpisso · 21/03/2024 00:32

Yes . My children went to Reading Festival when they were 17 and all survived!

Sasqwatch · 21/03/2024 00:33

No

Janetsmug · 21/03/2024 00:35

Depends how she's planning to get home. Public transport? Alone or in a group?

MamaWillYouBuyMeAWillYouBuyMeABanana · 21/03/2024 00:40

Yes, I would make sure she knew times and routes etc to take and hope she has fun.

By 16 they should be independent with only a tiny bit of guidance really.

It depends what you're worried about.......... what do you think is going to happen?
Do you feel your daughter is sensible enough to make a decision like this? And to make her own way there and back safely?

Or can you offer a lift home, if that's what you're worried about?

When do we start trusting that our children have learned what we've been teaching them about safety?
When do we let them start learning to make their own decisions?

DiscoBeat · 21/03/2024 01:04

I would but I'd take her and collect her (and the others if they were happy)

RogueFemale · 21/03/2024 01:11

I would drive to collect her after the concert (but okay for her to go there on her own). Sixteen is very young, and she won't be with people you know and trust.

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/03/2024 02:19

Do you mean they are online friends and has she met them before ?

MariaVT65 · 21/03/2024 02:23

At 16 I had a job and had also flown to South America by myself at 15.

For me it’s less about age and more about how she’ll get back from the concert late at night in a safe way as a female.

Noraton · 21/03/2024 02:36

How is she getting there? I wouldnt want my dd to go in a car with young people I didnt know...

MariaVT65 · 21/03/2024 02:38

I would also personally found it a bit odd if my mum had insisted on meeting my college friends at 16 years old before ‘letting’ me go out with them.

Ridiculous24 · 21/03/2024 02:58

At college, that's it, you're off.

MineAgain · 21/03/2024 03:01

Yes, but I’d offer a lift to where they’re meeting up with friends and, presuming it finishes late, I’d insist on picking my child up after.

MaloneMeadow · 21/03/2024 03:04

Yes, of course

What do you mean is she sensible enough make a decision like this? It’s a bloody concert, not life or death.

If she’s old enough to be in college then she doesn’t need to be ferried around or mollycoddled by her mum

Remaker · 21/03/2024 03:10

My DD17 has been attending concerts for a couple of years. My main concern is how she gets home. Generally they all meet up and travel there together then one of the parents would pick them all up. I don’t like her travelling alone on public transport at night. Thank goodness she now has a drivers licence!

Oblomov24 · 21/03/2024 05:22

I'd want you to know how they are getting home. What are the buses, trains, Ubers like?
