Anyone still working after they get state pension?

WatchoutPetunia · 20/03/2024 23:11

I get my state pension next month but love my job - I just do 3 days a week. I work in admin but in a challenging environment - think custody/mental health .
I am widowed and enjoy the work environment and the people I work with. Some tell me that I am crazy to stay on but I just don’t feel ready to go. I feel I will know when it’s time to go. Anyone else the same?

I worked for 7 years after getting my pension but had to give it up following a nasty accident. I hate not working and now volunteer in a charity shop which I love. Twould be nice to get paid but hay ho..

Trumpton · 20/03/2024 23:16

DH does.. our pensions go straight into savings. He kept the parts of the job he loved and went part time. He is 72 now and shows no sign of stopping. It works well as it’s not set days but as and when.

Starlightstarbright3 · 20/03/2024 23:17

We had a lady at work big retirement then came back 6 months later . She missed it . Did another couple of years before retiring as she was struggling but does volunteer work elsewhere now .

Not me but my dad is still working full time despite getting his state pension. He loves it and is one of those who will never stop working!

Pipersouth · 20/03/2024 23:22

My mum works at 70+ she says she’d miss the contact - loves it still working in retail in the same shop for 20+ years! She’s the reliable one who supports those who have childcare issues/sickness cover but doesn’t work full time anymore. Gives her spending money so she doesn’t have to worry about treating the Grandkids!

mrsfollowill · 20/03/2024 23:44

A lady I work with has done this- she deferred her state pension for a year or two but has carried on working (full time too!) and will be 70 soon. Loves her job and is very good at it. She is a widow and lives alone and enjoys the company at work- very customer facing role. She uses the money to go on excellent holidays- is very fit and well in herself though and has a comfortable lifestyle- lots of meals out and weekend breaks etc.

converseandjeans · 20/03/2024 23:45

I think it's going to be harder to do this once pension age reaches 70. People will be completely exhausted.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2024 00:17

Yes. I'm self employed. I work Monday - Thursday but not full time each day and pick and choose what work I want to do.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 21/03/2024 00:44

dh and I are deferring ours. retired at 57, could have collected but now 67 and managing okay. tight but okay, the increase value in waiting hopefully will be worthwhile.

GodspeedJune · 21/03/2024 01:17

I’m not quite at this stage of life but my DGM worked at the family business until her mid 80s and my uncle is still going at 71.

On the other end of the scale my Dad retired in his mid 60s and it hasn’t done him any favours at all.

I think there’s much to be said for still working if you mostly enjoy the role, especially if it’s feasible to be part time with a good balance of downtime.

Lifestooshort71 · 21/03/2024 01:54

I carried on full time for 2 years after retirement age and deferred my pension - think it increased by 10% a year? I should have claimed and banked it instead as it's taken me over the allowance and I'm having to pay tax on it. Robbing bastards.

Morph22010 · 21/03/2024 04:44

not proper financial advice just what I’d do, but I’d take the state pension now and then pay into a private pension to keep my income down to the same level as pre state pension, assuming you don’t need the extra income at this point in time. You can pay into your private pension till 75 although maximum you can contribute per year is lower if you’ve already drawn down

If you’d have claimed it during the years you were working you’d have paid tax on it anyway, assuming your earned income plus pension in total was over personal allowance

Feelingstrange2 · 21/03/2024 04:59

Age is a number when you get past about 40.

Some jobs get harder to do as you get older. Health issues also have a major impact.

Well done working after pension age. I probably shall- part time. I doubt my husband will be able to.

AuntieJoyce · 21/03/2024 05:30

My DM worked three days a week in retail until she was made redundant at 75. She was very annoyed about the redundancy Grin

Fake news everyone

My mum got her pension a year ago at 65 but is still working away happily. Her role seems to suit this, the last person in it before her was over 80 when they retired.

Not if I'd retired and taken my pension when it was due.

What's fake about it? My mum and dad have both retired early because they were knackered and I know for a fact I'll be lucky to be still working in 10 years, let alone another 30+

Quitelikeit · 21/03/2024 06:47

@K0OLA1D

just because your parents were knackered it doesn’t mean everyone else will be when they reach that stage.

That’s what is fake about it!

WarningOfGails · 21/03/2024 06:50

My dad is 72 and still working. He has been saying for years he’ll retire next year!

my gran worked until 2 weeks before her death age 95 - towards the end she was just doing a few hours a week in my uncles business (answering the phones) but she loved being part of a team!

Willmafrockfit · 21/03/2024 06:51

a nursing colleague was still working at aged 80

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 21/03/2024 06:53

Not me but one of my loveliest colleagues is 4 years past retirement age and has no intention of stopping - which is good because I’d be bereft without her 😄

If you want to keep going, keep going 🥰

Not just my parents. I don't think I know any people happy with the pension age increasing. People in France were out in the streets striking about it. There is nothing fake news about it.

Elsewhere123 · 21/03/2024 07:10

If you are well and enjoying it, great. Once you start getting knackered you'll know its time to go.
