Harry Potter Studios Tour

DP got me two tickets to HP for my 40th birthday and as he's not bothered by HP he said I can take whoever I like and someone who will enjoy it.

I'm considering taking DD 10. She's not read the books and only seen the first two films, do you think she'll get much out of it?

she won’t no

LIZS · 20/03/2024 17:05

I've not read the books nor seen films other than in passing and still found it interesting and fun.

Mrsjayy · 20/03/2024 17:06

It's for you not her. There is loads to look at and see just take her if she wants to go and you enjoy your gift.

I took my ten year old who'd read all the books and seen all the films and even he only got a bit out of it. He wants to go again now he's a bit older.
I'd try and find someone who'd get more out of it, but I'm sure she'd enjoy the outing even if she doesn't 'get' a lot of the backstory

EarlofShrewsbury · 20/03/2024 17:07

I should add that one of her hobbies is costume and character design, but in a general sense.

Depends how into it you are - if you are a fan you can spend hours and hours in there, whereas someone who is not so interested will probably still enjoy it but it won't hold their attention as long. You might end up frustrated if she wants to move on more quickly.

In that case she might find it more interesting than most. The animations, costume and design sections were my favourites

She will definitely enjoy it if this is an interest of hers. Again its not for her !

I’d watch the first 3 films 🍿 together then go have a brilliant day! I took my 7 yr old recently and we both had a great time.

I would have gone alone quite happily, but he bought me a spare ticket so I could take someone with me.

It's an experience for fans really. If she's not particularly into Harry Potter, even if she likes costume design, I don't think she will love it.

The idea is that it brings to life the worlds you've experienced through the books/ films.

If she hasn't experienced that, I don't know if she would really care.

lavagal · 20/03/2024 17:11

We went last week with DD6 who absolutely loved it. We were there over 5 hours. However she is a HP fan, has seen all films and is currently reading the 3rd book. I would say you have to be interested in HP to enjoy the experience: when are the tickets for ? Have you time to at least watch the other movies with your DD? It's one of those places you can spend hours or equally rush through and be done in 2

Cant DH go with understanding it's your treat? I'd worry DD would rush you if she's not interested

There are a lot of masks / costumes/ props so perhaps she would be interested in that ? They share some tricks around how they do stunts and effects on screen which is cool

Sageyboots · 20/03/2024 17:12

We took our kids, we’re not massively into HP but there are some really good bits, we still really enjoyed it (though take a packed lunch as the cafes are rammed).

EarlofShrewsbury · 20/03/2024 17:12

I actually have another question for those that have been.

The cakes in the chocolate frog cafe... are those only to eat there or can you get a takeaway box with a selection to take home?

ForNaiceHiker · 20/03/2024 17:13

are you local op to the studios?

EarlofShrewsbury · 20/03/2024 17:14

The tickets are for mid May. We could probably watch a film or two per week before we go.

I booked tickets to the Harry Potter Studios - then made the kids watch a few of the films! They had never read the books. They did enjoy it and got a lot out of it (about 7 and 10yrs old at the time). I don't remember take away boxes at the cafe but maybe you could bring your own box and ask them to put it in? I think this is the cafe that is in the entrance / exit lobby?

EarlofShrewsbury · 20/03/2024 17:24

Not local, about a 3 hour drive for us.

I think it's amazing but I am a fan. DD aged 7 absolutely loved it but has seen all the films. There's time to watch the other films with your daughter if you want to take her and if she liked the first two films. Gringotts and the dragon is amazing but they are in later films. She would need to see film three to understand Buckbeak in the forbidden forest section.

If she likes costume design then she may well really enjoy it. DH enjoyed it and he's not into Harry Potter. It was just amazing to see all the work that went into the films.

Definitely take a packed lunch and just buy a snack if you go to the cafes. Butterbeer ice cream is nice but the drink is horrible.

The gift shop is ££££££

But overall you will have a brilliant time.

BackAcheWoes · 20/03/2024 17:29

Watch the films together and take your daughter. We went a few years ago and loved it. I think she'll get more out of it if she watches the films / reads the books before going.

We took dd for her 16th birthday as she's a fan. I've seen the films but it's not really my thing. I was happy to spend 4 hrs there, found it very interesting and particularly liked the props, costume, set stuff.

Speakingofdinosaurs · 20/03/2024 17:39

Over the years I’ve been 6 times with my sister (older ladies & we live quite close) & we always have a fantastic time. We enjoyed the films, haven’t read the books but we’re both crafters and we get so much inspiration from the amazing artistry and details of the sets and props.
The atmosphere is amazing & the quality of the exhibits are astounding.
Well worth a visit.
