'Reasonable adjustment' while waiting for autism assessment

Namechanged but regular poster.

I'm currently awaiting autism assessment, estimated wait time at least 2 years. One of the things I struggle with is the feel of certain materials, styles of clothing etc. I cut all the labels out the back of tops for example. I work in retail where we have full uniform including company trousers which are plain black with a few stitch details in company colour and a logo (hidden by shirts) below the waistband. They are (to me) unbearable - stiff material, no elasticity, I can literally feel every place they touch my legs and 'I can feel my trousers, I hate these trousers' becomes my dominant thought if I wear them. I have, until now, been wearing plain black elasticated slim fit trousers of my own without any issue but new area manager is making a real point on clamping down on uniform standards. Work trousers are described as 'jean style' so it isn't a matter of formality - if anything I would say mine look more formal!

Do I have grounds to ask for reasonable adjustment to continue wearing my own trousers without yet having a formal diagnosis to support the claim?

You can ask, but your employer can say no. Once you have a formal diagnosis they can’t really say no. Lots of employers though would be happy to make the adjustment now if you ask :)
