Frogs and toads near you - have they come out of hibernation yet ?

West Yorkshire. I've just come back from my local country park and I came across several pairs of common frogs getting acquainted. I heard them before i saw them! Quite a few masses of frogspawn too. Also saw several newts swimming around; I don't know if they hibernate or not. No obvious toads. I thought it might be a little early in the year for amphibious activity but I suppose the weather has been relatively mild recently. Tomorrow is the vernal equinox which means springtime. Hurrah!😀

Frogspawn in my pond was mid February, so I think a long time ago.

That said although you see the spawn you never see the frogs around this early in the year. So I suspect they wake up, do their stuff and then go back to sleep.

I have seen a lot of spawn in the streams where I am. One big lot sadly got washed away but another I saw the other day survived. I think the warm temperatures plus heavy rainfall must be bad for wild frogs.

We get a lot of toads in our garden but I haven't seen any yet. Mind you, I've not been outside rooting around as it hasn't stopped raining!

RainingCatsandfrogs · 19/03/2024 15:59

My cats have started bringing them in again, so yes, they are definately around.

Ours have been filling our pond with spawn since mid February. We’ve had to net it as the Heron has been eating some!

2Old2Tango · 19/03/2024 16:00

Yes. I'm in the South East UK and my mum has a load of frog spawn on her pond that's been there a few weeks.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/03/2024 16:01

Local pond is teeming with frogs, tadpoles and eggs. I was surprised at how many frogs actually, hundreds of them.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/03/2024 16:01

Spawn not eggs 🤣. I couldn't think of the word!

Tiddlywinks63 · 19/03/2024 16:03

We generally start seeing them around Valentines Day, we’ve had frogspawn in the pond for nearly a month now.

EveryKneeShallBow · 19/03/2024 16:06

East Scotland. Was loads of spawn and a swimming frog in the pond yesterday here.

TheTecknician · 19/03/2024 16:08

Golly. Sounds like they're late rather than early round here.

Just checked my pond and some of the first tadpoles are getting to the wriggly stage where they are wriggling in the jelly and trying to escape.

Ive been pottering around in my tiny garden today and spotted this cute little one...im.assuming its a toad🐸

Yes we have quite a few but not much spawn as we have big fish and they eat it.
However I did have Sandy the Randy frog try and mate with my pink croc last week,
my foot was in it 😂

GasPanic · 19/03/2024 16:14

I used to have two big goldfish that feasted on tadpoles but they both died.

It's hard to keep frogs and fish in the same pond I think because fish need cleaner water and frogs seem to do better if you neglect it.

PeatandDieselfan · 19/03/2024 16:16

Yes! On our rainy evening walk last night, DS and I counted 14 frogs, including 2 couples. Northern Slovenia.

The goldfish aren’t too bad however we have a massive carp that I think would try and eat one of us if we fell in.

BarrelOfOtters · 19/03/2024 16:18

We've finally got frog spawn in the pond...north west england. Very pleased to see the frogs back as we had to take out a very established frog filled pond to build an extension and have been feeling guilt ever since.

Pootles34 · 19/03/2024 16:22

Yes definitely out and about - our garden is an amphibian sex club. You'd think they could at least find a bush!

Half the time you can't tell how many frogs are in the 'pile' - just legs and bellies sticking out dirty buggers.

TheTecknician · 19/03/2024 16:34

@myusernamewastakenbyme That's a common frog. Their colours and patterns vary enormously. Toads are usually squat and flatter with dry-looking skin.

TheTecknician · 19/03/2024 20:11

@GasPanic I don't know about carp generally but goldfish apparently aren't that fussy about their living conditions. This might explain why there are so many wild populations in the UK. As an invasive species, they're considered an environmental threat.

They sure are waking up, saw loads on Saturday when we were walking round a local pond and caught this pair crossing the path

TheTecknician · 19/03/2024 20:43

@Ratfinkstinkypink Those are common toads. Good pic too. I tried to get a photo of the courting frog couples this afternoon but they were having none of it. Can't really blame them!

Yup absolutely moving at night when I go to check sheds.

Locals all over the area are setting up rescue groups to help them all cross the roads.

Martinohmygod · 20/03/2024 06:33

We have this every year normally at end of Feb.
