Acute severe pain that passed

Yesterday I had what I thought was period pain initially but within minutes had become the worst pain I've ever experienced, it felt like labour, I was laying on the floor groaning, sweating and then pain was making me sick. It lasted about an hour, work called an ambulance, it was an hour wait so husband arrived to collect me and take me to hospital which is local. By the time he got there the pain has mostly passed. Doctor did a CT scan which was clear.

I queried an ovarian cyst rupture but have been told that pain wouldn't stop (but I've read it does), would a ruptured cyst show on a CT several hours later?

I'm a little shocked about how much pain I was in and frightened if I'm honest, especially as I have no real answer.

I had something similar recently and was diagnosed with gallstones. Worth getting a referral to a gastroenterologist for a scan. I have been told I need to have my gallbladder removed or the pain will recur but it's been nearly 2 months without a further episode.

Sounds like gallstones. Are you female, do you have children, are you over 35, do you have a BMI over 25?

Workhomework · 19/03/2024 11:57

Thank you. Someone else mentioned gallstones but isn't that pain higher up? This was very low pelvic pain. I will certainly investigate this further, thank you.

Woman, 40's, two kids, BMI 23.

Would they have shown on CT though

A while ago I had what eventually turned out to be trapped wind. The pain was so bad I called 111 who were useless. Eventually called an ambulance to be told 5 hour wait. Was so distressed at this I threw up - and the abdomen pain started to ease. Was sore for 4 days after. Never had anything like it before or since. Hope you get it sorted.

Lower down, sounds like a kidney stone. The pain continues to get worse until you feel like you're passing out, dizzy, hot flushes, and apparently I was a charming shade of green. Started like a stitch and just got worse.

It then just ... went. But it felt slightly tender in the area.

Higher up, around the heart or to the side, gallstones. Similar type of pain in the way it ends, but the pain came in waves, I assume as the stone passed through the duct. Similar hot flushes and dizziness, but had more nausea with this.

HolidayHappy123 · 19/03/2024 12:06

My apparent gallstones did not show up on CT or MRI scans but that may be because they are very small hence it passed quite quickly.

I don’t know. If the pain was so low then you’re right to think about ovarian cysts. I thought gallbladder problems because of the severity of the pain that comes with no warning and then disappears.

I'm booking a private gynaecologist appointment just for some reassurance, was pelvic pain for sure.

Sounds like it could have been ovarian cyst op

Sounds like it could have been ovarian cyst op

That is my gut reaction but the doctor kept saying the pain wouldn't have subsided but I've read it definitely can.

I had this, GP thought kidney stones. None seen in a scan, think I passed them.

Greybeardy · 19/03/2024 18:31

with all the usual caveats about guessing the diagnosis...sounds rather like an ovarian torsion that had untorted itself by the time you had the scan. If it happens again keep going back.

RandomMess · 19/03/2024 18:52

My friend was investigated intensively for gynae issues due to location of pain. It was gallstones in the end - took years to diagnose and have it removed.

NCForQuestions · 19/03/2024 19:23

Ref kidney stones, the pain was very low down, below where I'd get period pain normally, and to the right of centre. I've never felt pain like it, would say 8/10 for agony and I've had migraine since I was a kid so I've a high threshold for pain!

I felt like I wanted to bear down, or pee or something but didn't pass much when AI tried. Had three attacks, in the space of a week, lasting 10-45mins each. Felt bruised afterwards for days.

Just as an update in case anyone else has this and stumbled across the thread. I had 5 weeks of reoccurring urine/kidney infections after this, finally a amazing 111 doctor was cross I'd been fobbed off (had been back to GP several times). She wrote to my GP and I got an ultrasound scan. They found a 4mm kidney stone, it hasn't come out yet 😯 I assume the episode I had was another stone and caused irritation on the way down (totally guess work from me but it sort of makes sense).

Little bit surprised they are not following up or monitoring at all. Have intermittent niggles that side. Guess we'll wait and see!
