Should I follow up on this job today?

I've had three very positive interviews with a company, culminating in a final task which I had to submit before Monday.

I submitted it on Sunday afternoon and have heard nothing - so no receipt to say they had received it whereas they were very email responsive before.

Is it too soon to email them to check they got it? I really want this job but also don't want to seem like I'm hassling them!

bloody hell…. 4 interviews!

yes, drop a line and just say that you would be grateful if they could acknowledge receipt please

Celia24 · 19/03/2024 10:42

@lunchanddinner 3 interviews. I initially interviewed for one role, before the hiring manager realised I was better suited to a new role in another team.

Yeah it's the norm to acknowledge receipt isn't it? It's all so nerve wracking.

They're taking the piss. I bet the task was a piece of work that a contractor was going to be charging for but they got you to do for free as an "interview". I don't want to say it but I doubt there is or was a job at the end of this.

Mazuslongtoenail · 19/03/2024 10:54

I’ve recently been interviewing and did 18 interviews over 5 roles - 3/4 seems standard now in my industry.

I think it’s a bit soon to chase personally.

shoppingshamed · 19/03/2024 10:55

Tbat a lot for a job, what kind of industry is it?

If there are many applicants they may just be working through the tasks

That’s a massive assumption. I doubt they’d invest the time in conducting 3 interviews just to get the task completed. Especially as the outcome is hardly ever quite right anyway as the candidate doesn’t know the business fully. They’re usually about judging the approach to how they’d complete it.

ScottBakula · 19/03/2024 11:03

I'd wait until tomorrow morning, they may have a lot of other applicants to go through and as you submitted it on Sunday afternoon ( nothing wrong with this ) there may be more before yours.
A polite
" hi *, I submitted my piece on Sunday at ** time ( so they can find it easily) and was wondering when I would get feed back from it "
Good luck !

I think asking for acknowledgement of receipt is fine at this stage, especially as they have been prompt before. It could be sitting in a inbox a person off sick hasn't looked at.

KeiraKnightley2 · 19/03/2024 11:12

Yeah it's chasing for the outcome but receipt of the task.

It's a change of responsiveness is always a bit jarring.

purplemunkey · 19/03/2024 11:23

Checking they received it is fine I think.

Tasks are a very normal part of the process in my industry. It’s certainly not a way to get free work, it’s a chance to see if people can demonstrate the skills they say they have. We normally use a task we’ve already done internally, or a fictional one.

You’ll often find people who say they can do x, y and z can’t when given the task. Or someone who didn’t blow you away at interview performs very well at the task. All really useful to consider. As an interviewee it can be useful as well as you get a sense of what the actual work might be like and how good/bad the company is at briefing you.

have you heard from them op?

Celia24 · 22/03/2024 09:54

@ForNaiceHiker I did!

They contacted me this morning saying they are planning to send task feedback and 'next steps' by April 2nd. Basically the hiring manager is going on holiday after today for the week.

So by the time I hear, just over 2 weeks will have passed since the interview. Is this a normal timeframe for a busy company?

I think so yes. I’ve been looking and the difference in speeds is incredible. I’ve had four interviews and an offer in the time it’s taken others to come back with first interview dates.

And some have gone fast and then halted due to holidays / busy periods and then suddenly sped up again. I don’t think what they’ve said is particularly unusual.
