Places that make you feel uncomfortable.

And those that make you feel very comfortable, too!
I mean in the UK, or could possibly be outside it too.
I don't mean tourism exactly, just places where you felt uncomfortable or were eager to return home from. It doesn't have to be a bad area, it could easily be somewhere known to be beautiful and thriving.

For me it was Hebden Bridge, a sort of looming gloominess I couldn't shake off. I know people who live there so visit a few times per year, and that sensation never changes. It isn't easy to explain.

As much as I adore Shrewsbury (it has a cat cafe, so it's a winner!) I have felt a bit off there, too. A sense of manic energy, insanely loud traffic in the town centre, I found that I couldn't seem to rest, even in the suburbs.. A shame because I loved so much about it and it is a very friendly place with gorgeous buildings.

Liverpool didn't work for me either. I find the local people to be so helpful and lovely, but something about the Mersey and especially the docks made me feel unutterably depressed (yes, I know it's history, but it wasn't simply that).

Ambleside made me on edge also, and unlike the rest of the areas amongst the fells I felt drained there. It didn't help having single file sized pavements so everything felt slightly dangerous and overwhelmed.

Now for my favourites:

I do love Ludlow though, I felt so calm and at peace there. The light was mellow and soft. There wasn't all that much to do, apart from the good grub and castle, but I could live in an attic there and paint all day forever. If only..

I also loved Edale in the Peak District. A very tiny village with one shop if I recall and a great pub called the Nag's Head. I used to feel as if my heart was being torn out when I had to go home. I felt as if the landscape there had it's arms around me, softly.

I was happy in Penrith, although this was 10 yrs ago so it may have changed somewhat since. I hadn't wanted to go as it looked miserable and grey but I felt so at home there.

I also adore just throwing myself into the heart of London. I always come alive there. Not sure I'd move in, even if I could afford it (!) but yeh.

Halifax. Just made me feel depressed and hemmed in.

Bristol. Felt awful there
and couldn't wait to leave

Same

Also hated Bristol. Had high expectations! Oh no, it felt menacing and depressing.

Really surprised that a couple of people have mentioned Rowntree Park in York. I guess that York's history, and the location of the park outside the city walls, probably mean that some horrible stuff happened there. Maybe people are feeling that.

@SingingKettles my parents have moved recently to Penrith, as my sister and BIL now live there. I didn't expect to like it as I'm a city girl. But I could happily live there. It really surprised me.

Penrith is like Toytown or Trumpton (in a good way).

CumbersomeRobes · 19/03/2024 08:30

Betsy y coed is just sinister, had to leave a day early.
The Lake District is claustrophobic to me and crowded. Maybe I've just got used to big beautiful skies living near the Fens but I always there's something blocking my view in the lakes!

CumbersomeRobes · 19/03/2024 08:31

Happy places for me are Norfolk coast, York and the N York moors and Derbyshire

Place I hated: Dungeness.
It was like a post-apocalypse, just felt all wrong and threatening

I like most places.

Except the Mersey in Liverpool - a terrifying river

I love Dungeness for these exact reasons 😄 I seem to like bleak places. I went to Shetland a few years ago and the best way I can describe my feelings about it is that it touched my soul and made my heart soar. I follow a couple of people on social media who live there and their pictures always just make me gasp.

I visit Herefordshire quite a bit (family) and, while I know it’s beautiful, that kind of rolling, lush beauty just doesn’t touch me in the same way.

Bolton
Went for the first time a couple of years ago and it was an absolutely miserable place.Couldn't wait to get out tbh

I live in Bolton there are some nice parts ,but the town centre is dire full of pound shops and charity shops it's a shame because there is some really nice buildings ,ie the town Hall Le mans crescent but it's a shit hole.

I obviously look unsympathetic! I think experiences do vary. I found Brighton awful, but it's popular on here.

Yep but I think it depends on when you visit a place too
My only visit to Brighton was on a wet miserable weekend in January in 1994 so.i probably didn't see it in its best light 🤣

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 19/03/2024 09:07

Woking - I have friends there so visit often but I always feel really uncomfortable and just 'off' when I'm there, I can't really explain it. I always get a sense of relief and I can feeling my whole body relax when I'm driving away.
Paris - I lived there for a while and I hated it, I felt so u easy and on edge the whole time. I was so happy to move home, I don't intend to ever go back.

There's a lot of places that I feel relaxed and happy in but the stand out place for me was Queenstown in New Zealand.

I was surprised by how much I loved Liverpool when I went there. Also feel very at home and relaxed in Somerset.

I’m from Shropshire so totally understand why people don’t like Craven Arms. It is a very weird place. I also get very uneasy in the Stiperstones area.

The place that has made me feel most uneasy though was Porlock. I felt really panicky and I couldn’t wait to get out of the area. I felt myself physically relax as soon as we were back over into Somerset. Really odd.

I've lived in Porlock and can tell you it's the least friendly place on earth. Such a shame as it's beautiful beyond words..how the people manage to ignore that and spend their time shunning 'incomers' and moaning about dog poo is beyond me.

The next door place is called Porlock Weir and the sign is always getting changed to Porlock's Weird....they're not wrong.

Same here!

Bothered me enough to start a thread about it a while ago!

Can you do a link to your Bristol thread please @Spinxsta . I'm fascinated.

Propertyhuntingsucks · 19/03/2024 09:58

Places I’ve felt uneasy and wouldn’t return to;
Birmingham
Bradford
Hull
Coventry
Milton Keynes
Salford
Port Glasgow
Greenock
Livingston
Dublin
Newport
New York

Nice places. Mumbles, Bangor Ireland, Malahide, Arran, Lymm, York

SomersetTart · 19/03/2024 10:04

Most of Cornwall makes my heart sink but Redruth and St Austell stand out as places humanity has given up on itself. Worst of all though is The Lizard. I once drove a van out of there at night with my foot to the boards feeling like I was being chased by the hounds of hell.

The place that makes my heart sing is the Somerset levels....like the modern world can't tame it and never will.

Really dislike Glasgow and surrounding towns - its so bloody bleak. The depressing weather (just constant drizzle and grey) along with the grey pebbledash houses (why oh why are all the houses coated in that stuff!) makes me so depressed. Even nicer areas just seem depressing and run down due to the total grey-ness of it all.

Dislike Derby and Leeds too. Just rundown and depressing I found (Leeds had a bit more buzz though I guess).

Really enjoy York and Norwich

The words of someone who hasn’t experienced a good Glasgow night out! I felt the same way until I experienced the amazing Glaswegian hospitality. Great fun and so friendly!!

Sounds like you spent your time all in the 'surrounding towns' rather than in Glasgow proper, which has a lot of beautiful red sandstone and massive and highly desirable Victorian townhouses.

Mairzydotes · 19/03/2024 12:40

A shop in a local shopping centre . I remember feeling sick and dizzy in there. It closed and a new shop opened there. I was in there and felt sick and dizzy again.

Also , Bradford. Everyone was so hostile ( although it was around the time of the race riots) .

DrJoanAllenby · 19/03/2024 12:41

Leeds.

Whattheduck · 19/03/2024 17:01

Birmingham recently visited as Dd had an audition there. The whole place felt off and I couldn’t wait to leave Dd didn’t like it either. We were going to go out for something to eat after her audition but both of us just wanted to come home.

Totally agree about all those places. I really felt spooked . Whereas I love other areas of Cornwall.

Why? It's the least uncanny place I've been. It's very matter of fact and planned.

that's the reason! Its SO planned.

hellsBells246 · 20/03/2024 13:20

@ProcrastinationCentral (great name!) - MK has so much green space, so many parks and so on - they don't come across as 'planned' at all. It's a great city to be outside.

It's a great city to be outside. That could be construed in more than one way Grin
