What is this yellow flower?

I have seen them in hedges recently and adore them, am not very well versed with plants and shrubs so hope you can help! Are they particular to a specific area in the UK or are they everywhere? Would love to know more.

Forsythia I think!

bluecomputerscreen · 18/03/2024 12:18

forsytia (spelling?)
witch hazel looks similar but flowers earlier

Thank you, they do look very like those after searching the web, although these seemed to be less 'upright' than the google pics. Also called golden bells, just beautiful.

I had seen one whilst walking in Cumbria, I was utterly enchanted by the contrast of golden warmth agains the grey, rainy surroundings. I have recently started to paint watercolour florals so am eager to learn more.

Forsythia

TheSpottedZebra · 18/03/2024 12:47

Forsythia are most often found in cultivated areas.
The one you saw out walking was possibly gorse.

(Unless you were walking round the streets or parks!)

I agree, probably forsythia if it was in or near a garden. Gorse if out on the moors. Another shrub/tree with lovely golden flowers is laburnum.

boobybum · 18/03/2024 12:55

Could it possibly be a broom plant?

SingingKettles · 18/03/2024 12:59

I was in Lake District last week. One if them was in a small terraced back yard, I also noticed one on a public footpath between houses, and over a wall in a large garden.

After reading about forsythia, they seem to be the ones - that the flowers are four petals and become pendant (drooping) in rain, as in my picture. The twigs were quite thin and reddish-brown coloured.
They tended to be mixed in hedges or against walls along with daffodils and Hydrangea (?), pictured:

I also think it looks like Forsythia. Have you ever heard of the Plantnet app for identifying plants? I like it a lot, have used it often on my walks. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.plantnet

Fitzbillie · 18/03/2024 12:59

I think they might be winter jasmine rather than forsythia. Forsythia is more upright than winter jasmine. Do you have a close up photo of the flowers?

They are closely related species. Neither is native to the UK, they are cultivated plants.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g will check those out too, thanks!

My parents were very keen gardeners as is my sister now. I never took notice i thin because I was always surrounded with plants and flowers.....I am ashamed of myself now! They have suddenly burst into my life with such incredible force at middle age Grin. I used to paint landscapes but have moved over entirely to flowers recently.

Yes! Very like winter jasmine! How confusing, these have 6 petals. No close ups sadly. Winter jasmine does have the more 'sprawled' look of my Cumbrian shrubs, along with the reddish twigs..

I will check out the app, thank you.
