Anyone had a hysteroscopy?

Hi,

As a precaution my dr has asked me to have a hysteroscopy. The only issue is I'm due to have one just before I go on holiday. I'm not too worried about delaying it but wondering how quick I'd recover if I had one before I went. I don't want to be in pain or bleeding whilst I'm away. Thanks.

I had it with GA so I was tired afterwards and a little constipated for 24-48 hours. It didn't hurt at all afterwards (had painkillers prescribed plus medication to stop stomach spasms) and no bleeding. Went to work the following day and 2 days later went back to running, etc.

Yes, I did to have a copper coil fitted. It's not a huge procedure, was uncomfortable during it but as soon as I was up and dressed I was fine. It definitely shouldn't affect holidays or anything!

HornyHornersPinger · 18/03/2024 07:43

Oh! Just remembered I actually had TWO hysteroscopies, because it wasn't until I was spread out on stirrups with a camera up my hooha they realised they didn't have a copper coil to insert the 1st time! Had to go back a week later and go through it all again.

I'm so worried I'm going to bleed or have period pains afterwards. Honestly nothing ever goes right for me and knowing my luck my whole womb will fall out when I'm on my hols!

I had one, it wasn't too bad just uncomfortable. Once dressed I drove myself home and had no issues with pain or bleeding. They found fibroids which I later had removed with a GA. Good luck.

Mistymist · 18/03/2024 08:38

I had one under GA. It wasn't uncomfortable after, just a bit of bleeding but nothing major.

iwantsunshine1 · 18/03/2024 08:54

I had one. I found it really uncomfortable at the time but afterwards was fine and no bleeding or cramping

minesatea · 18/03/2024 08:56

I had one on Friday. Small bit of bleeding on Friday and Saturday. Some cramping but fine today.

alonglongshot · 18/03/2024 08:56

I had one just before Christmas - still waiting for the results mind you - I was back at work, a desk job, just as soon as I was home. Bit uncomfortable through the procedure but nothing afterwards.

WeAreWarriorsWeAreWarriors · 18/03/2024 09:20

I've had one. Drove home and made dinner. It's not fun at all but no bad cramps or heavy bleeding afterwards. Good luck.

LovelaceBiggWither · 18/03/2024 09:24

I had one under GA. I did bleed after but no cramps or pain.

Underwatersally · 18/03/2024 09:30

I had one, I took co codimal about 30 mins before I had it, didn’t really feel a thing. Took some more paracetamol 4 hours later and was fine. Was home in time for the school run and back to work the next day.

LaBobkin · 18/03/2024 09:39

I've had two without GA and one with. For the two without I took painkillers beforehand (the letter they send will advise this) and experienced discomfort during the procedure but no pain. Felt fine afterwards, drove myself home, made dinner etc (husband was in hospital when I had the second so flying solo with DC at home). Some light bleeding for a couple of days for which they advise you use pads rather than tampons. Similar story with the one under GA; hysteroscopy bit was fine, recovery from the GA took longer.

ghostbusters · 18/03/2024 13:51

I had one under GA as part of fertility investigations. I had bleeding after, and maybe spotting the next day. I was quite crampy when I was back on the ward but fine by the next day. I had my cervix dilated so no wonder I was bleeding and cramping! Took longer to recover from the GA than the procedure itself.

BlueEyesBrownHair · 18/03/2024 14:24

Someone i know had one for fibroids but wasnt offered GA and she said it was horrendous. Make sure you have that.

Cherrycakenut · 19/03/2024 17:27

I'm just drinking strong tea back at home after having one following post menopausal bleeding.

The procedure was very painful, despite gas and air and a local anaesthetic into the cervix. I have some scarring following an endometrial ablation many years ago which may have made it more painful and the gynaecologist dilated the cervix.

The pain afterwards doesn't seem to be worse than period pain and the gynaecologist said my experience isn't typical.

I was very much in charge of being able to tell her to stop when the pain was bad. I am bleeding a bit now, which is to be expected.

The good news is, my cervix, vagina and uterus look healthy and the biopsy was done as a precaution. I'm glad I got away without a GA.

I had one done a few weeks ago, in the morning. It was uncomfortable rather than painful, and I did have some cramps in the afternoon- I didn’t go back to work that day, but I was fine for the next day.
There was a tiny bit of spotting, but really nothing much.
They were able to tell me on the spot that they hadn’t found anything to worry about.
I found it all sounded much worse than it actually was. And it was really quick, less than 5 minutes.

@Fullofpudding Here's my day 2 report - bleeding appears to have stopped, but pain wasn't eased enough by paracetamol and I didn't sleep well - in retrospect, I should have taken Night Nurse (co-codamol makes me feel sick).
I still feel a bit wobbly but the pain has eased. Because of the pre-existing scar tissue, I was poked around a lot though, it took far longer than 5 minutes and the gynecologist had to have several attempts. I'm in my 60s, my younger self probably would have at least been working from home by now.

As with any procedure, there's a risk of complications like an infection afterwards, or in a tiny, tiny percentage of cases, making a hole in the womb (I had to sign a form to say I understood the risks).

So, make sure your insurance covers you if you're going abroad - it might be sensible to see if you can delay until you return?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/03/2024 13:47

I had two.in my 40s to investigate heavy bleeding.

They were uncomfortable but not horrendously painful. I was back at my desk straight after. There's no way I'd have needed a GA for them, but I appreciate some women find them more painful than I did.

DramaAlpaca · 20/03/2024 13:55

I had one four weeks ago, along with a Mirena coil insertion and a small polyp removed.

No anaesthetic, and I'm happy to report that the whole procedure, while a bit undignified, was completely painless. I was expecting it to hurt, but it didn't at all.

EasterBunnny · 20/03/2024 14:26

I’ve had four with a GA, I took it easy for the rest of the day and was fine the next day.
