Books to read to 6 year old DS

DS loves a few books being read to him as part of his bedtime routine but I think we need to invest in some new ones - any recommendations?

We've got all the Julia Donaldson ones as well as funny ones about pirates, ghosts, class 2 visit the zoo, the aliens love underpants series, Percy the Park Keeper etc.

The ones we've got seem to be be a little 'babyish' but we're not yet at Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, diary of a Wimpy kid etc level yet either - we need something in between.

He really likes funny books, and ones that rhyme always go down well too but am stuck for books that we can read to him every night that he will enjoy (these are for us to read to him, we've already got lots of suitable ones for him to read to us).

All ideas welcome! Thanks

Are you a member of your local library? You can usually take out up to 10 books at a time so you'll have lots to browse through and choose with him!

The dinosaur that pooped books are great.
my 4 year old loves them and they’ll appeal to older kids too.
there’s planet, Christmas, halloween, the past, a princess and a few more I can’t think of.

If you can get over the awful covers, Abi Longstaff’s The Magic Potions Shop series were favourites at that age - first chapter books but not complex.

I’ve shopped my childhood bookcase - we are working through the faraway tree at the moment. Having chapters and no pictures has been a big step up but actually great for his concentration.

My six-year-old son loved Ronia the Robber's Daughter and Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

The Claude books by Alex T Smith - short and bridge the gap between a picture book and a chapter book. Also some of the shorter Dahls like the Enormous Crocodile or the Giraffe the Pelly and me. If you try a longer chapter book he might surprise you. I have a 6 year old and we have just finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which he loved.

My six year old enjoys horrid Henry stories. Also Winnie the witch, but not the picture book ones, the ones with four stories in one book. Similar format to Horrid Henry.

I'm actually after more books in this format so will keep an eye for further replies!

My nearly 6 yo DS likes:

Horrid Henry
Wigglesbottom Primary
Flat Stanley

Wigglesbottom Primary by Pamela Butchart
She also has another series that's a bit longer form. Baby Aliens is the first one and we've just started that.

Daisy and the Trouble With... by Kes Grey

The House that Sailed Away/Follow That Bus/Mona Lisa mystery by Pat Hutchins

Secret Seven by Enid Blyton

Leonora Bolt by Lucy Brandt

My DS is 6 and loves all of these. We do still read picture books too sometimes. He has too big sisters though so I think he likes to have chapter books the same as them.

Yes Horrid Henry is perfect for age 6/7, there's also a great set of Michael Rosen funny stories you can buy that's perfect for that age group.

Treehouse Series, Andy Griffiths and Terry something. Lots of pictures and very silly humour, sort of halfway between a graphic novel and a chapter book.

The magic faraway tree has captured the imagination of all my children. They are lovely stories perfect for 5 and up

That's what library's are for

You go with your DC and they choose a few books for a week or so and then you return them and choose more

Don't put your pants on your head Fred- my son LOVES this book

Other big favourites- Mog, Six Dinner Sid, There's a bear on my chair/ a mouse in my house, If I had a Dinosaur

And definitely look up Rachel Bright- her books are just beautiful, from the words to the illustrations. The lion inside is her most famous, I also love the squirrels that squabbled.

Don't Put Your Pants on Your Head Fred!

Donna shares a silly story about PANTS!!!!

Your oh-so-clever post would have worked better if you had managed to spell “libraries” correctly.

Fail. See me after class.
