Advice on a blocked number

BitCreepedOut · 17/03/2024 21:18

I've name changed as have already talked to friends about this but was interested in what the Mumsnetters think.
Bit of a long one, vaguely complicated so I've stuck in loads of paragraphs but it did happen & Im not a troll/bot.

A few weeks ago, I got a couple of bizarre text messages asking if I was available & a slightly dirty phone call in the middle of the night. I blocked the number straightaway & thought nothing more of it - wrong number perhaps.
As soon as I'd blocked the number, the texts & call history disappeared from my phone.

Last night I'd booked a cab from my local cab company to collect me from the station. It's a cab company that I have used for years & my mother & her friends used it frequently. We've never had any problems with them.

Normally when a cab arrives, the driver does something techy & you get called by the cab company & upon answering the line goes dead but you know your driver is waiting.
My phone didn't ring & I nipped into the express supermarket to get somethings. When I came out, I still hadn't heard anything so I called the office & they told me he had arrived & was going to call me from his mobile.

My phone didn't ring. It was only when he got out of the car that I realised he was my cab. He couldn't understand why I hadn't been receiving his calls as my phone was ringing when he called the number.

He dropped me home, it was late, I was tired, I just thought it was a sort of technical glitch.

Have just been thinking about this. My phone was working fine - my Dad had called me about 30mins before to discuss the rugby.
If I'd blocked a number, it wouldn't come through would it but the caller would think my phone was ringing. That's how it works, isn't it?

Sadly my blocked contacts list doesn't give a date/time of blocking. I'm assuming the list is in date order however so the number would be quite near the top.

I called the cab company & said there'd been a technical glitch with yesterday's communication so could I have the last 3 digits of the driver's mobile number.
The office were quite rightly about doubtful about this - maybe it was breaking some GDPR rules - and were asking why I needed the number.

Anyway, they finally gave me a number that was 1 digit out of one of the blocked numbers eg 346 instead of 345.
The phone number was quite high on the list - no 4 or 5 - so I'm assuming it was fairly recent.

I've spoken to a friend who now has the number. He's going to call it in a week or so asking if he can get a cab & we'll take it from there.

I'm just a little freaked out.
I did unblock the number thinking that maybe missed calls/text might appear so now the number is unblocked on my phone & I can't work out how to block the bloody number again...
I don't know who I was talking to on the main office number - it might've even been him!
I've got a Ring doorbell & my house is secure so I'm not worried from that point of view but it all seems weird.

This is the first time anything strange has happened that could possibly be linked to the cab company. I'm not sure I'd recognise the man again - it's a large firm & they have a lot of drivers. They all have valid licences on display in their cabs.

We have a plan of action & a way forward which I'm happy about.
I'm just interested in what the collective MN minds & guts make of this.

Sorry I’m a little confused- were the last 3 digits the same as the blocked number? If not then it’s very unlikely that this was the number that was contacting you.

I’ve been blocked before and when I’ve phoned the number it didn’t ring. It just told rang once and went to voicemail but it didn’t give me an option to leave a voicemail.

I think there most likely was a glitch in the system. I think you’ve panicked yourself and think it was this man.
unless you’ve had any contact with him before then I highly doubt it’s him and would assume that some person has given a man a fake number and that’s sadly worked out to be yours .

If I block someone it does same as pp rings once at the callers end then straight to voicemail but no option to leave a message

Amongst my list of blocked numbers there is one with the last 3 digits of 345.
When I called the office for the driver's number that just hadn't been connecting to my phone, the last 3 digits they gave me were 346.

What I am suggesting is that the cab driver's number actually ended in 345 but cab office altered the number that they gave to me, covering for him.
That he & his number were indeed involved the dirty call & texts.

As you say I'm overthinking this & it is a ginormous coincidence.

It's probably a glitch but the fact that he was calling me & the calls weren't coming through even though I was standing about 10 yards away & his number is 1 digit away from a number that I had blocked is mildly disquieting...

Have you ever had any contact with this man before?

It’s possible that the cab company gave you a different number, really they shouldn’t have given you any details at all as they’ve broken GDPR. Even if the last 3 digits were the same, you don’t know the full number .

Sadly it’s hard for us to know the truth unless there’s a background history and he’s picked you up a few times?
If he was phoning you and you could see/ hear it ringing then there might have been a glitch as a blocked number wouldn’t be able to phone you.

Bestyearever2024 · 17/03/2024 22:44

If you block someone's number and they then ring you, the call will either go straight to voicemail or it will cut out (if no voice mail turned on). It won't ring on the callers phone or your phone

I am sorry to say but I think you might be right about the other guy trying to cover for him by changing the last digit. It just seems too much of a coincidence.
