How far do you live from a park?

Inspired by another thread about what age you let your kids go to the park alone. Several posts it sounds like the park is very close, which means kids can play alone at an earlier age.

We live in the centre of a market town, we have 3 parks but they are all 20 minutes walk, with some main roads. I can't imagine letting the kids go alone until maybe the summer before senior school. They would need to have some street sense. And maybe a phone.

So, how close is your park?!

We're 10 mins walk from the nearest park, but it's a big London Royal Park so it's full of tourists so I wouldn't feel as comfortable letting DD go there compared to a smaller community park. It's very safe in some ways as it's patrolled by their own police force and there are lots of staff around - cafes, gardeners etc. But lots of hidden corners and people passing through. DD would likely walk through there to get to senior school, so I'd be OK with her going there by age 11. Would probably let her go on her own at age 10, because they tend to start walking to primary school around that age.

8 miles although the beach and woods are within walking distance so that’s where ours went.

I'd say about a 3 minute walk. We live in a small ish village. Both my children were allowed to the park from around aged 8. They are 12 and 15 now and get the bus into town to meet friends etc as not really much to to do in our village now they are older.

In the next street so about a 3 minute walk.

Floralnomad · 17/03/2024 21:23

We have a park a 2 minute walk away and a huge heath / field about 5 minutes away .

hiredandsqueak · 17/03/2024 21:23

Less than 200 metres to the nearest park.

Onabench · 17/03/2024 21:23

5 minutes walk away.
My DC is 10 and they can play outside. But the local park is full of glass and graffiti so they can't go there 🙂 second closest park has the same issue.

MonkeyPuddle · 17/03/2024 21:24

Closest park is 7 mins, another is 15. Then there’s a field with some goals and rugby posts about 10 mins away.

Spendonsend · 17/03/2024 21:25

80 yards

Octavia64 · 17/03/2024 21:26

Outside my front door.

Revelatio · 17/03/2024 21:26

We have three within a 5min walk, but that’s common in north London. We have a toddler, so definitely wouldn’t let them go on their own!!

Comedycook · 17/03/2024 21:28

Nearest is less than five minutes but my dc never played there without me. It was very very quiet and I never felt comfortable there. Another was ten minutes walk away and very open, you could see everything that was going on and was usually busy...so ds went there end of year six by himself.

SprainedBum · 17/03/2024 21:28

We have 3 parks about a 5-7 minute walk in varying directions. Takes what feels like hours with a small child and dog though

RosesAndHellebores · 17/03/2024 21:29

I had to Google. 1.2 miles. We didn't live here when our dc were little. There is no way they could/would have walked there alone.

SquashPenguin · 17/03/2024 21:30

One opposite my house, another one two minutes walk down the road. I love it, we’re very lucky.

HungryBeagle · 17/03/2024 21:31

About 200 yards. And another about 500 yards away. A much larger one with playing fields and skate park less than 1/4 mile away.

BresciaBike · 17/03/2024 21:31

Under 60 seconds.

kikisparks · 17/03/2024 21:31

Three minutes walk, at the end of our street and we’re in the middle of the street.

Upinthenightagain · 17/03/2024 21:32

3 or 4 minutes walk. My kids don’t go alone though

Amethystanddiamonds · 17/03/2024 21:35

We have the remnants of a park about a 10 minute walk away. Not that we ever visited because it was shockingly bad before the local youths decided to burn it down. There isn't another park in walking distance.

sanityisamyth · 17/03/2024 21:37

Park or playground?

Park - 5 min walk.
Playground - not sure as only just moved to the area and DS not very bothered.

He's 10 and walks to/from school by himself though so wouldn't be bothered about a trip to the playground. He's got an Apple Watch and iPhone I can track.

Clevs · 17/03/2024 21:38

Five minutes drive away. Google maps reckons 1 hour 4 minutes walking (3.8 miles) along a busy dual carriageway, so not really possible with my five year old hence why we always drive there.

Simonjt · 17/03/2024 21:41

About 8-10 minutes, here children will play there alone and get themselves there alone from 7, the other park which our son goes to more often is about a 15 minute walk.

BouleDeSuif · 17/03/2024 21:46

About 100 metres ish. I can see it from my kitchen window.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 17/03/2024 22:01

4 big parks within about 15 min walk in different directions, nearest is 5 mins.
