Suggestions for a weekend away with ten year old ds

Dh and dd are going away for a sports thing for dd both over Easter weekend and the weekend after. (This happens a lot in our house.)

For Easter weekend ds and I are going to my parents which will be nice.

But I have just had the idea that maybe ds and I could go away for the weekend for the second weekend.

But I don’t know what to do or where! Centre parcs looked quite fun but ds is not keen. Not sure why - maybe because all the 1 bedroom places only have a double bed and he doesn’t want to share with me! And he might be concerned that I will make him go for walks in the forest.

Soooooo…. Any suggestions! Not camping! I do not do roughing it. And single beds. And maybe no lovely forests.

We live in Yorkshire so North of England.

Maybe a hotel with a swimming pool (we are both big swimmers) but with lots of fun things nearby.

London. So much to do and see and yiu can get a twin premier inn room, feee breakfast for him, then see some sights. Maybe a show at the unicorn theatre, which is for kids.

Belfast. Titanic museum and docks. Trip up the coast to the giants causeway.

One of our favourite mini breaks ever.

Thanks for the tip. We've been thinking of Belfast but friends returned in Feb saying the museum had been unengaging for kids so its put us off. Were your kids a similar age?

My ds loved a weekend in Bath at that age, going round the Roman stuff and having afternoon tea at the Pump Rooms. He loved that afternoon tea!

Ds and I got a coach from Darlington to Legoland Windsor with National Holidays. We stayed in a nice hotel and got an afternoon then until 2pm the following day at Legoland. It was massively less stressful than organising it independently. They have quite a few trips aimed at families.

Hey, we just thought everything about Belfast and the coast was glorious. We didn't go specifically for the museum, but we enjoyed it! Ours were between 6 and 13.

We stayed in Portstewart and only spent a day in Belfast, but we wished we'd have spent longer there.

We had a pretty basic Airbnb apartment, but it overlooked the sea. And to be honest there was so much to see and do we literally just slept there.

I always recommend NI whenever friends ask for recommendations. Honestly the best 5 days we've had away as a family. We came back full of it. But perhaps don't just go for the titanic stuff, there's so much more than that.

Hope that's useful.

How is Belfast for visitors who don’t look like the majority British population?

Alton towers?

I don't know, I'm white and able-bodied.

But when we were in Portstewart my husband and I did comment on how there was very little diversity (because we did that whole, 'could we live here thing?' and this was in the cons column.)

We didn't see or get the sense of any racism (I think this is what you're asking), but we didn't see any black people to see how they were treated (caveat, I know I can't be the judge of this either).
