What's some of the most useless advice you've received?

OP posts:

Sleep when the baby sleeps. Yeah ok I'll just leave all my other children unsupervised

Stay for the sake of the children

Don't stink hot drinks over a babies head..... no shit really? If your that thick you shouldn't have a child

Always help friends and family even if it's detrimental to your physical or mental health because we all need to help eachother out and be kind AKA a walkover ESPECIALLY as a woman

From the HV after dd started sleeping through the night at about 4 months and her weight gain tailed off slightly: wake her up in the night and give her a feed.

What a stupid idea.

Avoid stress.

How exactly? People have jobs, families, illnesses, financial problems etc etc.

It's totally unhelpful advice.

shockthemonkey · 17/03/2024 11:07

Interesting, Anna. I feel the same.

Also, jobs/families aside, it’s in our nature to seek out stress at least sometimes, since we like challenging ourselves to some extent (some more than others). That inevitably leads us into a state of some degree of stress.

'Dont go to sleep on an argument'.
I hate this...i don't sweep things under the carpet... address it, satisfactory conclusion for both, yes but if not no...i will go to bed on an argument

Try harder to sleep and stop being depressed.

Most useless advice

In every school report of my childhood- 'sockarefootwear needs to be more confident'. No advice on how to achieve this or encouragement to take part in anything that would have been confidence boosting. In fact, every time I put myself forward for something that would have helped (a minor part in the school play/school committees etc) I was told that basically I was capable but they needed someone more confident.

If you want to lose weight just eat less. No shit sherlock. If only it were that easy.

icantwaitforsummer · 17/03/2024 11:27

Getting a hair cut makes your hair grow faster. It really doesn't! Your hair is dead and doesn't send a message to your follicles!!

Agree with poster above, don't go to sleep on an argument. Nonsense, sometimes I'm really pissed off and a good sleep and time to think helps us both chill out. Less emotion the next day.

Constant LTB on here, usually said by single bitter people where misery loves company. If your partner is lying, cheating or being abusive of course LTB. But because he didn't call you on a stag do, or is struggling to give up smoking, or didn't get your birthday present right, or spends too long on his hobby is not grounds to break up a family. Marriage is hard, divorce is hard. Pick your hard.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 17/03/2024 12:11

It's a tie between 'do nothing and see what happens' and 'you just need to get more fresh air' when diagnosed with depression.
