SPOTIFY - how do you arrange your playlists?

Mine are a mess. I have ‘things I like’ which is massive, I’ve followed certain singers and that seems to create its own playlist, I have some other lists which contain songs in the main one but also some which aren’t. And on and on. Messy.

So, how do you do it? Is there a system that would be better?

I am assuming you do have playlists actually. Maybe you don’t 🤯.

Mine are just split up into time periods of when I found or listened to that song a lot. I made a few at the start, like childhood songs and early secondary school, late secondary school and then as I keep getting older I just make new ones when they each get to about 10 hrs long, so college songs, 2nd year uni, etc
This works cos I find the music I like changes over time and its nice even to go to the middle of one playlist and its all the songs I was loving when I was on a particular road trip or during a nice summer etc

I then have a few extra ones that are specific types of music that are nothing like the others, like a country music one and trashy pop music from kids parties. Because that stuff is nice but is something I need to be in a specific mood to listen to, so it gets playlisted off on its own.

Musicals/show tunes that I like to belt out whilst cleaning
Stuff DP doesn't like that I listen to alone
Sex
Shared playlist with DP which is just everything we both like

I've got a cool tunes playlist. Mostly upbeat tunes that I sing along to or get me dancing. Mostly tunes from my clubbing days.
Chilled playlist does as it says on the tin. Anything from Mamas and Papas, Christine and the Queens, Kaiser Chiefs. It's pretty random.
I've got a 90s list, indie list, funk & soul list, my kids have a playlist each.
Music, and what I want to listen to, is very much dependent on my mood, so I try and sort lists according to that.

I used to have a master one I called "Joy Sparking" which I just dumped everything I currently liked on and then deleted stuff as I got bored or annoyed by it, but I felt like it was too samey and I never listened to any new music, so I made four called Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter, and I do the same process with these. The result is interesting because they tend to end up with quite different themes. Spring is quite folky, Winter is moody but also has some nostalgic cheesy 90s/80s stuff, Autumn is a mixture of emo rock and more folk, Summer is more poppy.

I have one called headache friendly for when I want to listen to music but I have a headache and certain voice tones or drum beats are a problem.

I have one called wind down which I switch to after 10pm. I put anything soothing in it and delete stuff that gets me fired up and energised. Sometimes if I'm trying to go to bed but a really good song comes on I just stay up listening to music for ages Grin

Other than this I listen to albums.

Oh there is also the shared playlist feature which is nice - I have the shared one set up with my sister. It automatically chooses from songs I play and songs she plays and tries to work out what each of us will like out of the other's music. This is normally a nice selection.

The shared one I have set up with DH seems to mostly be Blippi Hmm

I love making a good playlist!

I have a current playlist, where I add songs I am currently enjoying - could be anything. I delete/move songs every so often if they become tiresome, but some have stayed the course for ten years now.

I then have some playlists loosely based on a theme or genre e.g.: dance, chill, classical, rock/metal, sad songs, retro and a rock/rap/emo combo which seems to be a homage to the early 90s/00s. Very loose definitions though : my "chill" playlist could be anything from indie, to classical piano pieces to new age etc.

I recently combined all the albums of my four favourite artists into one playlist. Then if I can't decide what to put on, I just hit shuffle for guaranteed enjoyment. I also have a playlist of my favourite ever songs, which I keep very exclusive.

A friend of mine likes her playlists divided into periods of time like a PP.

If you're not sure what to listen to, i find going to the 'song radio' (3 dots next to the song) for a particular song will remind you of epic tunes you have forgotten about.

OneBigShenanigan · 16/03/2024 20:04

I dump everything into liked songs.

Oh, but I also have a 'psycho bitches' playlist which is specifically for when I need that vibe 😁

GameOfJones · 16/03/2024 20:13

I organise broadly by theme or mood

So an upbeat playlist for the gym

A chilled one for more relaxing songs. Normally listened to when I'm in the bath!

One that's sort of in the middle of the previous two for me to listen to in the kitchen when I'm cooking. It seems to have a lot of hip hop songs on it 😂

A playlist specially for driving in the car which features a lot of rock music

TeabySea · 16/03/2024 20:15

I've got a couple for specific bands or singers. I have a couple that are themed (e.g. party music, classical music), and then one long playlist of things I like by various artists that don't fall into the other categories.

CurtainsOfGrey · 16/03/2024 20:38

I have one called good songs which I really need to clean up into moods as I often skip things.
Then there is the top songs of 2023 that I listened to. In fact I listen to this more than the good songs list now tbf.
Then it is mostly podcast episodes that i listen to for work research/info. Some are added as inthink they would be relevant, as well as some I have already listened to and I could do with another listen to refresh myself on the info. Then a second podcast episodes list of things inwabt to research for my own personal life. Again to be listened to or already.listened to go back and remind myself.

Everything else I listen to is podcasts, so they are filtered to unplayed and I can just play them that way. They aren't the referred back to ones, not serious, just entertaining iyswim?
