Yes, I hate cutting it. Fine for dahl/soup/veggie chilli but if I was roasting it to just eat I'd probably get fresh.
Other veg: green beans/sometimes cut pepper/onion (cut to save time)/carrots/sweetcorn/peas. I like to be able to add veg on the side without wasting anything.

Depends what you want it for. It's better if you're going to cook it and whizz it up in a sauce for example. It doesn't really cook well if you're looking to roast it, for example.

I find it softens a lot more quickly than fresh so it’s fine for soups but breaks down too much in dishes where I prefer it to keep its bite.

I use a ton of Sainsbury’s frozen sofrito mix (very finely diced carrot, celery and onion), I use it as a base for loads of stews it saves so much work doing it myself.

Frozen peas are great but you do get what you pay for
Frozen BABY broad beans are fab

Other frozen veg all good from a nutrition point of view but I never expect them to taste of much and they won't stand up to any cooking except being warmed through. Some are disgusting eg frozen main crop broad beans.

Crumpetdisappointment · 16/03/2024 11:41

i normally use frozen green beans but tthey need to be properly sieved.
i might just have to buy a whole butternut squash in this case

Frozen butternut squash is brilliant in soups.
i use a variety of frozen vegetables, more economical than fresh and reliably nutritious.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 16/03/2024 11:50

I use it and roast it and it’s fine, I’m not putting it in dishes though I just roast it and eat it as a snack so maybe it doesn’t hold up well in dishes. I nearly cut my thumb off chopping one up a few years ago so prefer to buy frozen as it’s pre-chopped.

I also use frozen peppers, onion and garlic. They are not as good as fresh but good when in a hurry and for in things like omelettes.

I tried using frozen leeks in soup and it was awful, spongy and stringy. Threw the soup out it was so bad and went back to fresh leeks.

is it holding its shape in the soup?

I chop half a squash, freeze it, then later defrost, roast it till slightly browned and use it in a chickpea curry or dahl. It does hold its shape but it's mushy. Fine in a curry, I think, because everything blends together.

I tried frozen butternut squash...I thought it was vile. Had a really odd fishy taste

Crumpetdisappointment · 16/03/2024 17:22
