I always have to think twice when spelling fourth.

Sorry, off-track, but only in late middle age did I finally drill it into my head that ‘definite’ and ‘definitely’ have no a.

Chas and Dave made a decent living out of London-speak. Good on ‘em.

Yes Sixth is another one. It used to bother me a lot when I moved to England from Scotland that the x was missed out. I couldn't get my head round it but I've learned to live with it.

How could anyone spell sixth without the x?? Were they all star wars fans or something?

Blueberrycreampie · 16/03/2024 13:23

🤣maybe?

Blueberrycreampie · 16/03/2024 13:24

Although it wasn't spelling just speaking.

Not spelling, pronunciation. I’m Irish, and noticed pronouncing it as ‘sickth’ was widespread in England. He only time I ever discussed it with an English friend was when she moved to Ireland and found the ‘sixth’ pronunciation odd — she claims she can’t say it, but I’ve never met an Irish person who says ‘sickth’.

Yes. I love the sound of this word (I'm Autistic and have Echolalia which means I often repeat the sound of words I like over and over) My Mum always chuckles at me when I say Twelve or Twelfth as I like to pronounce every letter clearly (if they makes sense)

Sixth is an number that annoys me when I hear it spoken out loud, as most people seem ro pronounce it sick-th instead of si-x-th.

Oh god I hate the way tv presenters etc pronounce the sixth. They say sick - th but the th part is usually silent so they end up just saying sick. Why can't they just say the sixth?
