Knowing which charities to donate to

Any recommendations / otherwise - based on personal knowledge - for charities that genuinely do good work on the ground?

I donate to Mind / Welsh women's aid / Shelter Cymru at the moment as well as some charities local to me, but would be interested to know who others support. (Generally I avoid cancer / animal charities, because I know they get a lot of donations compared to other causes.)

I like the work Freedom from Torture does, and asylum seekers get such a hard time it feels like a small pushback against that

Beyond the Streets, because everybody in sex work should have a way out if they want to take it and I can't imagine what many of them have lived through

My local foodbank

Sight savers international because their brochures always got to me!

I have supported Women's Aid in the past, that's a good one. And shelter Cymru - da iawn, hefyd! I'm with you, I don't give to the ones who get lots of attention. I know animal charities do well, so I think they're covered, but do have a membership to my local wildlife trust which is basically charitable giving!

Thank you - I'll definitely check out Freedom from Torture, I don't know them. And yes, some kind of response to the demonisation of asylum seekers is really important.

I support two local hospices (one childrens, one adults) and the local air ambulance.

Mistymornin · 15/03/2024 19:25

I support our local food bank by leaving items in the supermarket trolleys/boxes.

Twistie · 15/03/2024 19:32

I volunteer 12-15 hours a week in a charity office, so I donate them my time rather than cash.

Local food bank & baby bank with item donations

I regularly shop in charity shops.

Will donate cash/online payments to various other charities as they come up ie through JustGiving via the school etc.

I quite like LendWithCare

You don't have to lend money - you can donate it if you want.

I always choose to support a woman, because as shit as it must be to be a poor man in a poor country, it must be even shitter to be a poor woman in a poor country.

Have you looked at Acts435, op?

They ask for small amounts for individual people. You can choose type of request or location. Look at their website. I think it's a wonderful way to help.

I've never heard of Acts365, it does look like a really good thing. Thanks @CatLevelCare

I try to avoid any charity that sends begging letters through the post because its such a waste. I support our most local air ambulance and a couple of smaller charities. Street vets provide vetinary care for the pets of homeless people and have a list of hostels that accept pets and Smalls for All who provide underwear for anyone in need, worldwide. Apparently there are places where having underwear is considered posh and reduces the likelihood of being raped. The Sally Ann gets a Christmas donation and I try to do a bit for my grandchildren schools. I also try to remember to put a bit into the collection points in supermarkets although it's not unusual for me to only remember as I pass the trolley on the way out

Personally I would support small local charities for me it would be those that support disabled children as I'm the parent of a disabled child .

I volunteer for SSAFA the Armed Forces Charity and I can honestly say they are the most caring, supportive and appreciative charity I could wish to be associated with.

They have many veterans in their midst, doing different roles such as fundraising, caseworking, chairing local branches, so it makes for a very authentic charity as so many have 'been there, done that' so can better support our veterans going through hard times.
