Day trips and weekend trips

Any suggestions for day trips or overnight trips that can be done with two preteen/early teen boys?

We are based in south London and have done most of the major things in central London and around us over the years and have been in a seriously lethargic winter slump and are low on ideas.

We're happy for day trips or go slightly further afield with an overnight or two. We just need to start getting out of the house! Where are your favourite places to go?

Alton towers or other theme park
Space museum Leicester
Brighton
Lyme Regis fossil hunting
Snowdonia?
York all the Viking stuff
Paris on Eurostar?

The Space Museum in Leicester is a great idea - DS1 is very into astronomy right now!

We've done York - that was a good weekend. Will look into the rest, thank you!

Bletchley Park, amazing code breaking.
Dover Castle, wonderful ruins plus world war bunkers
Stonehenge
Basically any English heritage and national trust places.
Bath's Roman baths
CHedworth Roman villa
Grimes graves

Visit some of the coastal towns - Brighton, Broadstairs, Whistable, Clacton etc.

Seal watching at Blakeney point in Norfolk

Portsmouth/Southsea is a must, so much naval history and even just wander around the historic dockyard for free is interesting. Watching hovercrafts going to isle of wight is fun.

More can be done over the weekend IE going on all those ships, harbour boat tours etc

The Deep in Hull

A big walk somewhere, maybe Snowdon if you're feeling adventurous.

Any seaside, lots of nice places in Kent that could be done as a day trip or a longer break.

Go to another city with no idea what they have there and just explore, maybe let the kids choose or pick somewhere from a hat or start with A and work your way through the alphabet.

A safari at Longleat or Port Lymphne or other similar place.

How will you be travelling? Use YHA- brilliant for kids as always others to 'play' with.

I’m going to say it quietly because I know it’s not ecologically ideal but extreme day trips on Facebook is worth a follow. That’s all about going abroad for days out.

I don’t fly often and haven’t done an extreme day trip but fancy the odd overnight European trip.

In the UK the Isle of Wight is perfect for an overnight with loads to do.

My dses loved Cheddar and Wookey hole caves too.
