"Are they not?" and similar phrasing

My young teen has started using this rather unnatural phrasing when speaking. "Are they not?" "Is it not?" etc
When I would expect most people to use "Aren't they?" "Isn't it?"

I've no idea where it comes from but I feel like I'm seeing it a lot on social media too. Do your kids speak this way? Anyone know where it originates from?

Indeed it does, but I do not believe he has been exposed to any such literary influences!

Hmm good point! I have toddlers, no clue where the kids get their slang yet!

I (F, mid 30s from London) use these phrases and my father always remarks on them. DH is from the NW and reading through the comments on here makes me wonder if it's something I've picked up from him. Going to consciously listen out now to see if my southern friends and family also use them...

They’re just formal phrases, as opposed to contracted ones. If it’s a phase, it will pass. If it isn’t, it’s not incorrect English so there should be no problems.

My teen DD has also started doing this OP! Maybe it's a TikTok thing?

Aha! I have a definite suspicion it is teen media related, yes. I've seen it written in social media posts as well recently.
I'd love to know where it has started from!

It’s deffo a NW thing. I was born and grew up in Yorks and never heard it until ex DP from Lancs used it. I now use it too 😔
