Birds Eye Custard Powder- out of date

Bluebellsinthewind · 14/03/2024 19:34

Just flung an individual apple crumble in the oven. I was in the mood for some custard with it, my tin is 2 years out of date.

Would you still make it/eat it?

Yes, it’s basically just coloured cornflour with a bit of flavouring so nothing to go off.

Toblerbone · 14/03/2024 19:35

Yes

KeyboardMash · 14/03/2024 19:37

Is it "use by" or "best before"? Because if it's the latter, you can basically use it until Doomsday.

Mine was similarly past its BB date when I used it the other week. I am still here to tell the tale I think.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/03/2024 19:40

I’d use it whatever it says. Things like that don’t really go off.

ScottBakula · 14/03/2024 19:41

Yes as long as its still powdery and not set in a lump

TheMurderousGoose · 14/03/2024 19:42

Of course. Nothing in it that could harm you.

Did you know that Mr Bird invented Bird's Custard as his beloved Mrs Bird had an egg allergy and couldn't eat proper custard? Powdered true love in a tin.

adagio · 14/03/2024 19:42

I’m still using a tin that went off in 2007 (we don’t have much custard). Family still alive so far!

AyeupDuck · 14/03/2024 19:44

DH found a packet of custard powder from his student days it was about 15 years old and he ate it. He is very much like Martin off of Friday Night Dinner with his disregard of dates.

Im currently using self raising flour, use by date 2015.

I dont do a lot of baking FYI

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 14/03/2024 19:46

Yes, did this a few weeks ago and still here to tell the tale 😋

SignoraVolpe · 14/03/2024 19:47

Dh recently used a tin of condensed milk which expired in 2022.
He was fine.

I LOVE birds custard and hate all other custards. Because as well as being egg free, its also, as far as I know, vanilla free or doesnt taste that strong of it

I cant stand all these overly vanilla custards which means I virtually never have it because in restaurants you cant exactly say 'knock me up a bit of Birds please'

I love alllll the custards but I agree some of them can be a bit too vanillaish, a bit too fancy pantsy creme anglaise for their own good. Bird's is its own special thing!

'knock me up a bit of Birds please' Grin

Yes. I'd say its the milk that matters.

suki1964 · 14/03/2024 19:52

Im still using a litre jug of dark soy sauce bought in 1992 with a use by of 1993

Its fermented, it doesnt go "off"

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 14/03/2024 20:04

The rule with powdered foods is:
If it moves, chuck it, for it has been a victim of the weevil invasion.
If it doesn't move, eat it.

The dates on it are largely inconsequential.

This is my kind of kitchen rule 😁

@TheMurderousGoose aww, I didn't know that story. How romantic was Mr Bird 🐦 💖🥰

Thanks everyone. My apple crumble with custard was delicious 😋
