Seeing GP tomorrow about savage periods. What should I ask for?

Another week from hell with a hideous period. It’s really affecting work and along with the constant pain making me feel really shite - nauseated and depressed.

My GP needs ‘help’. I can’t just rock up with symptoms and expect him to know what to do. I have to do my research first and then tell him what I need.

I want to stop my periods. I used Hana, the over the counter pill for around a year and that was amazing but I can’t seem to get hold of it now.

I’m hoping for a substitute. It was a progesterone pill. Are there others I could ask for?

Your gp shouldn't need help!

Anyway I was prescribed cerelle which is a mini pill for my periods which stopped them.

Edited to add you should find a GP who doesn't need you to research your own medication

My GP needs ‘help’, basically patient led treatment. Seems to be the way it goes these days. Mine is like this.

I have no idea but could you ask a pharmacist what would be good alternatives?

Desogestrel 75mg is what's in the hana pill, if you were happy on that it should be a straight swap.
You could also consider Mirena coil although it can take several months for things to settle, but you don't need to worry about it for several years once it's in.
You could also think about depo provera injection, which lasts 12 weeks but you can have it 11 weekly if you're bleeding by week 12. although this can take a long time to leave your system and for your periods to return to normal if you ever want to TTC.
Each of these have their own pros and cons so do some reading around these so you go in well informed.

My mirena coil stopped my hellish periods. Miracle. Worth considering.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/03/2024 18:28

Have you considered the Mirena coil? It's been life changing for me. No periods at all now.

Pupsandturtles · 14/03/2024 18:29

Mirena or mefenemic acid.

My GP always asks me what I think is wrong 🤷 I'm not the one with a medical degree!

After kids I had a mirena coil. It was fab. Spotting (light) for the first 10 weeks but no periods after that. Needed to get it replaced after 5 years but the GP couldn't get the new one in, my cervix said no. So I have desogestrel mini pill, it's one with a 12 hr window to take rather than 3 hrs. Haven't had a period since I started 3 months ago and no other side effects that I've noticed.
I have PCOS and absent periods rather than nightmare periods. And I'm perimenopause on HRT.

Good luck.

If Hana worked for you, then you just need your GP to prescribe the progesterone only pill.

Marvellous thing, no periods at all.

Katelynn88 · 14/03/2024 19:42

I take cocodamol for the pain. It's the only thing that helps. I would rather manage my pain than stop my periods altogether.

AnnaMagnani · 14/03/2024 19:52

There was no 'managing' the pain I got from my periods.

Not having them at all was the best thing that happened.
