Has it always been so gloopy? I've been eating lidl own brand for over a year but they didn't have it in stock so I have gone back to the OG. It's REALLY hard to spread. Was it ever thus?

Lidl is certainly a different texture to regular marmite so maybe you've just got used to it. I really like it but also haven't been able to get it.

Yes I think it was - that's half the beauty of it. They thinned it down for the squeezy bottles but the stuff in the glass jars has always made you work hard for it.

I swapped to Tesco's own brand a while ago and like you bought Marmite as couldnt get Tesco's, and agree its really hard to spread. I much prefer Tesco's or Lidl's brand now.

Love Marmite. Do you keep it in the fridge? I no longer do and find it much easier to spread

It keeps tearing the toast

Same! Took a month to swap over but it was just so much easier!

No I don't keep it in the fridge? Am I meant to? It's the normal stuff in a jar not the squeezey

No, they've def buggered about with it - much harder to spread than it used to be.

I find it’s harder to spread in the winter, especially in the morning when the heating has been off all night.

FictionalCharacter · 13/03/2024 17:39

DH is addicted to it, so we always have more than one jar in. At the moment we have one big jar, nearly run out, which is the horrible thick stuff that tears the bread. We also have a newer small jar and that’s much softer. It seems to vary a lot.
DH never finishes up a jar or bottle of anything before starting a new one. Grrr.

I thought so as I really can't remember it tearing up the bread

I do think the texture of Marmite has changed: there's this tackiness to it, so you get the tearing when spreading it, and it leaves treacle-like trails, which it didn't before.

KnickerlessParsons · 13/03/2024 18:32

It becomes softer as it gets warmer so put on a radiator before you make your toast. Or stand it in a bowl of warm water.

Ooh thanks!
