Have you ever liked someone who refers to themselves in the third person?

Hi,

I was just wondering this, as I can't say I have. It instantly puts me off someone, but perhaps I'm being unfair.

There's someone in my village who does this all the time - on FB and in person, but they seem to be quite popular and refer to themselves quite regularly as a "legend" and "local celeb". It's sort of said tongue in cheek, but not completely. It's just an odd thing to keep saying if you don't believe there's some truth in it.

What does anyone else think? Does it put you off a person?

I've never met anyone like this.
If I did then I'd think they were a bit of a twit.

I think Hereyoume would never do such a thing, they are far too socially aware.

Never in real life. There used to be someone on here that did it but they died. It was very bizarre.

I used to have a fb who referred to himself for example as Pig coz his name was Percy .. so he would say Pig is tired , and it was such a turn off. It was baffling . I wondered if its connected to autism (he had many other signs) like how some autistic people like accents and can mask easier thru an accent. So by him referring to himself as Pig it wasn't HIM !!

I don't know but it didn't go on for long til it was a turn off.

Had a supply teacher who did this in primary school. By lunch time we were all asking her when Ms X was going to show up.

No-one has ever liked anyone who refers to themselves in the third person (unless done very briefly as a joke and even then it's a bit irritating).

Indeed.

I think the fact that this person seems so popular within the village is what got me wondering if perhaps I was in the minority, but then I've always assumed that this was universally classed as a narcissistic, dickish thing to do. Not sure how they get away with it so much.

I should probably mute them 😂

I went to school with a girl who did it all the time, and she was very popular. I think it came naturally to her as it never seemed affected. We just accepted that this was how she spoke. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coffeecake40 · 13/03/2024 13:37

@baileybrosbuildingandloan well I do wonder if some people are drawn to them because they're assuming they have lots of self confidence and some are just attracted to that. This definitely crosses the line of confidence to me though and enters into the arrogant, narcissist zone.

I used to know someone who did this sort of thing, and I always thought he was a bit of a dick.
