Please, for the sake of my sanity, I need some hard wearing trainers that will last longer than a month

Any recommendations please.

Dd is very sporty, and very rough and tumble. She's 8.

We have rugby, kickboxing, football and running clubs (some multiple times a week) as well as playtime at school where she's constantly active, PE, bike riding daily, playing on her scooter.... you get the picture.

She much prefers trainers from the boys section (she lives in joggy bottoms and jumpers).

It's great that she is so active, but her tainers are lucky if they last a month, I've bought cheap ones and expensive ones, and none last at all. I've just ordered my 3rd pair this year so far.

I did try having multiple pairs of shoes for different things but she's growing so fast that just costs more. The only extra pair she has is football boots.

Any recommendations for trainers that will last slightly longer much appreciated.

We have found adidas ones and ricosta ones pretty indestructible. But honestly if you’re throwing them out after a month I suspect you have higher standards than I do…

concernedchild · 13/03/2024 07:28

I have a pair of new balances that have lasted over a year. The insides are pretty banged up and I'll need to look into replacing the insoles, but the actual trainers are lasting well

My standards are on the floor, honestly, I'm gluing them back together after 2 weeks 🤣 it's Adidas that I've bought the last few times, they aren't lasting well, I'll have a look at ricosta, thank you.

I've never heard of those, I'll have a look, thank you.

That's strange. I have trainers that I have run for miles in through muddy woodland. What is she doing that destroys them so fast??
Even though kids trainers are probably less robust than adults surely she should be able to get some that are fit for purpose . Presumably you buy genuine sports ones rather than trainer-style 'fashion' shoes?

SableGrape · 13/03/2024 07:32

Sketchers work for me, and I spend a lot of time in them!

Namerchanger1 · 13/03/2024 07:33

I’m also confused how she’s breaking them - I do lots of sports but even if I tried to break some trainers I don’t think i could??

Its proper sports ones I always get her, she's just so active from the second she gets up, multiple clubs daily, then playing all the time at school and between clubs, they just don't last at all. I've been sticking to the £30-£40 price mark because I'm loathe to buy more expensive ones if they only last a month, so maybe that's it.

She needs an indoor and outdoor pair tbh.
For outdoor activities something like Salamon or Asics trails might do the job, iirc sports direct sell kids ones. They need to dry out in-between wears. A cheaper pair will do for kickboxing / indoor PE.

HandShoe · 13/03/2024 07:49

Sounds daft, but maybe get two pairs and she alternates pairs on consecutive days so the trainers get to ‘rest’. I’m sure I was advised to do this (very long ago). If you get two different types you’ll also be able to see which lasts better, and you can try replacing the ones that wear out first with a different brand?

veggie50 · 13/03/2024 07:52

Tennis shoes have reinforced edges, ankle and tips, they might last longer than standard trainers, give that a try?

MrsAmaretto · 13/03/2024 07:53

Do not buy sketchers!!!!!!! Lasted less than a day on my child ( no school uniform, climbing walls in playground)

is she wearing the one pair of trainers to all those sports and in leisure time?

she needs a seperate pair of boots she can wear to football and rugby. And then told in no uncertain terms not to use her trainers as brakes on her scooter and bikes as that’s what wrecks the trainers. Put her out in cheap wellies when on those play things and you’ll soon see that’s what’s wrecking her trainers. Or Send her out in wrecked trainers until she stops it

My kids have been put in geox or leather type trainers as they are more hard wearing than sports ones. You need something with a reinforced toe like a bumper bar. Things like adidas etc are crap despite the price tag. Then seperate football boots to be worn to football and rugby. Wellies for playing outside too.

PinkPondQueen · 13/03/2024 08:12

I wear running trainers every day for work and the best pair i've had were New Balance. Lasted about 2 years which included a good hot wash in the machine every weekend. Some really good offers on Sports Direct, I never spend more tham £40 on a pair for work. Currently wearing a pair of Under Armour and hope they will be just as good.

FreeButtonBee · 13/03/2024 08:24

i would recommmend Astro boots for her outdoor sports - we normally go for addidas for sports crazy DS and they don’t quite last through a whole winter but pretty close. Don’t get mesh or fabric trainers. It needs to be harder wearing.
then something else for strictly indoor sports

and I’d agree with cheap wellies for scooters or bikes. That kills shoes faster than anything (although playing football on tarmac is a close second!)

Heckythump1 · 13/03/2024 08:31

Skechers!
We all wear Skechers here, I have black ones for work, I'm on my feet all day and walk about 2 miles each way, 6 months in and they still look new.
Husband also wears smart Skechers to work and his last about a year.
DD both have Skechers and they also last nicely until outgrown.

DenmarkStreet · 13/03/2024 10:17

We live near a decathlon so all of us wear decathlon trainers. My reasonably active kids tend to only get new ones when they grow out of them. Perhaps worth a try as they are cheap but still sport shoes rather than supermarket stuff.

OneBlueHam · 22/10/2025 11:06

@StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips I know this thread is old but did you ever find a good pair? DS age 8 is wearing through trainers too fast - also very active, a lot of football in the playground at school aside from actual sports clubs. Stopped any using foot as scooter ages ago, he already has football boots for football, wellies for other outdoor stuff. Have always bought from decathlon, and have been fine until this year. See pic for what happpens!

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 22/10/2025 11:17

@OneBlueHam yes, I've been getting her the Adidas Grand Court shoes and they last really well. We have gone from monthly shoe buying to about 4 monthly. Took a while but I got there eventually.

Dds shoes were exactly the same, it's an absolute nightmare.

I have been wearing my Camper trainers as more or less as my only shoe since November 2024 and I walk miles on more than half of the days. They do kids shoes as well.

Almostwelsh · 22/10/2025 11:47

If kids are playing football on tarmac (as opposed to proper football training/ matches) that will wear shoes out really quickly.

You could try some of the football boots without studs intended for use on AstroTurf. They should stand up better to kickabout football games.
