Threadworms

My daughter has had them for over a weem
now. There are so many in her poo still. Sometimes she will do a morning poo and they seem dead but in the evening they are back and wriggling around in the poo and also coming out of her bum. I don’t know how much more washing I can take. It’s getting so stressful and the dr just says wait and they will go. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 HELP. I’m at my wits end. Honestly it’s sending me crazy.

Have you taken the medication?

You need to treat everyone in the household ideally taking one tablet each two weeks apart. Then washing like crazy in between. AFAIK they don't go away without treatment. You can pick it up over the counter in any pharmacy.

shoppingshamed · 13/03/2024 06:24

You went to the doctor? Presumably they told you to get the over the counter treatments and follow the instructions
Other than all the stuff you find online I'm not sure what else you can do

VWLS · 13/03/2024 10:02

Yes we have taken the meds. All the family. We took ovex. Have done it twice!!!

just don’t understand why at night they come alive and wiggle everywhere.

im like a crazy washer woman. Towels sheets PJs evey morning.

I've never known them to not be all dead within 48 hours of taking ovex - and we have them often (well, not me specifically, but the dc). Are you sure they're threadworms? If yes, sounds like an unusually bad infection.

VWLS · 13/03/2024 14:18

They are the small white worms.
its been nearly a week now.
I don’t know what to do.

Knickers on overnight, good dollop of sudocreme on the bottom.

Shower in the morning, fresh sudocreme and knickers.

Knickers help with bum scratching overnight, cream traps the little buggers when they are escaping .

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/03/2024 14:35

One of my children had a bad bout and the single dose of ovex then another two weeks later was not enough to clear them (fine for the rest of the family but not for the youngest who i suspect had had them a while before i realised.
Frantically googling i found that sometimes Ovex can be prescribed twice a day for 3 days, so that's what we did for him, and it finally worked.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/03/2024 14:36

Wouldn't have gone to the doctor for worms though - assume you are not in the uk?

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/03/2024 14:38

This has happened to him twice. Lots of grumbling in my house about Ovex being utterly useless (or this corner of NW London has ovex-resistant super-worms!)

minipie · 13/03/2024 14:41

When they start coming out in the poo it means it’s working. Healthy worms cling onto the gut and don’t get pooed out.

Does sound like she had a bad infection poor lass. Make sure you take another dose 14 days after the first one as that’s when the eggs (that didn’t get killed by the first dose) are mature enough to get killed by the ovex but not mature enough to lay their own eggs. Personally in this case I’d do a third lot of ovex after another 14 days too. Just to catch any stragglers. Or as a pp says, double up the dose for a bit.

Keep nails short. Is she a thumb sucker or nail biter or similar as this really does increase the chance of infection unfortunately.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/03/2024 14:55

Sometimes the pharmacy can be funny about selling you two boxes, just say you've got 3 kids and buy from different pharmacies if you need more.
The extra dosing didnt hurt him (an upset tummy once). And it stopped the weeks of night-waking and distress (yes even with liberal sudocream).
I was at my wits end too.
Peiodically i give him a single dose as a preventative. His class this year has been bad for nits and worms. 2 older dc never got either of them.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 13/03/2024 14:57

And now my youngest is trained to wash his hands as soon as he gets in from school for fear of worns returning. This has helped prevent recurrence too.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/03/2024 15:02

Pineapple is a natural dewormer, it was the only thing that sorted my dd out in the end.

TheNoodlesIncident · 13/03/2024 15:23

I wonder if it's down to reinfection rather than just their being Ovex resistant? If you've got another wormy kid in the class they could be spreading the eggs around, just like when you've that kid with untreated head lice in class. It's unfortunate that schools can't take a stronger line with parents about this, it's rubbish for the poor families that do treat promptly but keep getting reinfected because some parents don't care.

I'd keep treating with the Ovex as PP suggest. I do feel for you, it's utterly rubbish (and DH and I caught them too, the itching at night was horrific although we were lucky and didn't get them again).

That’s true about pineapple. My DB tried it on DNephew.

Okayornot · 13/03/2024 16:00

I assume you are washing sheets etc but you really don't need to.

Treat the whole family with Ovex and if it has been over a week since the first dose Id be inclined to give her a second one now, with a third to follow in 10 days.

She needs to wear knickers at night. Sudocreme is great for trapping worms, as is a blob of vaseline.

Make sure your DD's nails are kept short (and file them smooth so if she scratches while asleep she won't hurt herself) and shower her off in the morning.

VWLS · 13/03/2024 18:48

Omg I love all this advice. Than you so much. I just have her another ovex. Just gonna top her up. It’s just so wierd as they look so dead in the morning poo all stagnant and still. Then the night time poo if she does one they are wriggling around everywhere and so many falling out of her bum. Yes I have been washing towels sheets everything I see. Hoovering the house like a mad woman. I’m honestly exhausted by it. It’s relentless. I only called the dr cos I needed some advice but she just said I have to bear with it and they will go. It’s just seems nuts how long and how many there are. I feel so sorry for her. Also I just feel so bad that I am co stanly looking inside her bum hole. The poor child. Anyway thank you again. I really appreciate all this and pleas keep it coming if you have more ideas. X

thank you thank you thank you everyone.

Glad it all worked but maybe give pineapple as a snack for a while and deworm her again in 3-6 months time.

If we worm pets regularly why not children? And as I think I said earlier castor oil for worming was given on a regular basis before there were worming tablets.

It’s also a good time to reintroduce more thorough handwashing. Should be for 20 seconds. DNephew hates it (and washing his body) but if you use eg lemon soap he likes it better (the scent).
