I found a new job hooray! Would you just hand your notice in?

I couldn't be any happier (and it only took 10 days!) Would you just hand in your notice and leave. Or hand in your notice and copy the likes of MD and CRO? (I get along with them). I kind of want the message across that I pushed to leave, but don't know if it's worth it at this stage.

Congratulations on the new job. Provided you have signed the new contract, any resignation should just go to your line manager. Keep it short & sweet & include the date of your final day is.

Changingplace · 11/03/2024 19:45

I’d wait to get a contact through first :) And I’ve always handed my notice in in person, and followed up by putting it in writing - typically you’ll be given an exit interview as well where you can raise any issues.

LlynTegid · 11/03/2024 19:50

Make sure you have the new contract first.

goingdownfighting · 11/03/2024 19:53

Yes. Wait until it's signed and sealed

Drop a very courteous and professional email to your line manager. Do not copy anyone else in. Try not to disparage anyone or gloat. They generally won't care and might stop any counter offer.

Have a conversation with your manager about how you are going to exit. Then tell everyone else.

Wait until you get the contract from the new job and make sure that's all in order before you resign. I would just resign directly to your line manager either in person or by email (whichever you feel comfortable with), there's no need to involve anyone else.

chatenoire · 11/03/2024 19:58

Well my manager is partially the reason why I'm leaving... but yes contract should be with me by Wednesday, offer letter by tomorrow.

I have an interview on Wednesday and my boss has already been contacted for a reference but if I get it I will hand in my notice the same day

rustlerwaiter · 11/03/2024 21:07

I'd wait until the contract is signed and handed back. I handed my notice in last week and while I'm glad I'm moving on I felt like I was letting them down a bit. I always think working the notice is the worst part, it's hard to stay motivated and it's in the back of my mind something might go wrong with the new job.

I received the job offer verbally on a Friday, contract on a Monday but there was something I wanted to discuss with the new manager which I didn't get to do until Wednesday. Signed an returned new contract on Thursday, then waited until Monday to hand in my notice in case there were any issues.

Had a quick chat with my line manager to give notice, and then put it in an email to him. I heard back from HR a couple of days later to formally accept the resignation. No counter offer, no "is there anything we can do to change your mind?", and outside of the bare minimum contact I'd expect WFH I've heard very little from my current job.

Feeling less like I'm letting them down now.

UnravellingTheWorld · 11/03/2024 21:37

Congratulations! Wait until you have your offer in writing, then hand in your notice to your manager. Don't burn any bridges when you leave - you don't know what the future holds and, at the very least, you want to be well thought of by everyone there.

chillberri · 11/03/2024 21:40

Wait for the exit interview to give your reasoning why etc

MoreHairyThanScary · 11/03/2024 21:44

Professional letter to your line manager, if they offer an exit interview ask to do this with manage further up the chain.

If they don't then they're not interested in why...

chatenoire · 12/03/2024 05:30

Yes, I'll wait until I have the contract. My only hesitation is that by some miracle they offer what I want (role change) HOWEVER it would be made obvious why, so as a company I doubt they'd do it.

Just wait until contractually you are signed up to the other company and they've had and accepted your references. Then a normal notice period letter though I agree a verbal heads up to your manager would be appropriate. It is soooo tempting to do more especially if you think they're arseholes but resist the temptation. Leave with good grace even if your thoughts about them don't reflect that, because it is more beneficial to you to not burn your bridges than it would be to enjoy the momentary frisson of having delivered a two fingered salute on your way out.

Oblomov24 · 12/03/2024 06:18

The temptation is to say something. Don't. Rise above it. Email HR, only giving your notice. Normally you'd email line manager, but as he is the problem I'd bypass him and just do it to HR.

StarlightLady · 12/03/2024 06:21

I would just go quietly. Just in case they get nasty with any future reference request.

Also, congratulations 👋!

Yes, exactly given line manager is the problem, I wanted to bypass her. I thought of having an informal chat with my former manager (who my line manager still reports to) and then do it formally.

My line manager is very much of the "respect my authority" type of person, so thought that either addressing the letter to her and copying two other seniors was the right thing, or maybe the other way around.

I still want to say goodbye with two fingers in a very politically correct way

BTW I don't think they'll ask for references but we shall see.

Leaving and getting a better job is the ultimate 2 fingers.

HumphreysCorner · 13/03/2024 20:50

I was told today I got my job after my interview 2 hours before. Happy days.
