If you have had pneumonia, did you find you got more frequent and severe colds afterwards?

I had pneumonia last year and was hospitalised as I was so unwell. Since then I've noticed I pick up any cold going and the duration and severity is worse than it was prior to me having pneumonia.

Just wondering for anyone who has had pneumonia in the past, was this the same for you?

I'm sure I need to boost my immune system so will work on doing that to see if any improvements.

I had pneumonia twice last year, and now have a chest infection I can't seem to shake.

Yes, for many years unfortunately. I got pneumonia at 30 and thereafter, I’d get a chest infection that would keep me coughing from October to March. I’d brace for it, annually, this ritualistic chest infection. Pleurisy every year as well. This went on for about 15 years.
I’m 52 now and I never get a chest infection or even a cough. I think two things have helped: I walk outdoors with my dog for two hours daily. I also do a lot of breathing exercises, Dr. Andrew Weil’s is my go-to and box breathing. I think the combination of being outdoors a lot (I cycle rather than drive, taking low pollution routes) and really learning to take time to breathe and be nice to my lungs, has really helped. Strengthen your lungs through breath work and also, invest in a good air purifier for the home.

My sister had pneumonia a few years back and since then, the slightest cold or cough which I would shake off, has her feel like she’s coughing her lungs up,and lasts for a long time. It doesn’t matter if she has a chest infection or not, her lungs just seems to be very easily irritated, for want of a better phrase

It's so awful isn't it! I'm thinking about having the pneumonia vaccination. Anyone tried this?

I had severe pneumonia many years ago - in hospital for several days and not entirely back to normal for about 6 months. I don't recall getting more ill after - though maybe because I didn't feel great, I wasn't out and about exposing myself to germs. But certainly, it's possible as any illness can run down your immune system.

I've had pneumonia twice and am asthmatic. I don't pick up colds very often (even with two kids at nursery) but when I do they go straight to my chest, and I have a hacking cough for weeks.

DS had pneumonia a few years ago, he was in hospital for a week.
prior to the pneumonia he was quite a sickly kid, would catch everything going and take an age to fix it. However, since having it, he hasn’t been sick at all. He literally never catches anything and hasn’t had a day off school in years. Really odd but it seems to have given his immune system super powers.

Yes I was offered the vaccine and accepted it. I had previously had pneumonia twice.
There are various types of of pneumonia and the vaccine does not protect against all, but better than nothing.

Yes, I had pneumonia in 2009 and developed pleurisy as well. Every time I get a bad cold the place where I had pleurisy aches and hurts when I cough.

Dh is a GP and we were talking the other day because a friend who had a chest infection had asked advice (in front of me, no confidentiality issues). Apparently community acquired pneumonia (CPA) can take up to 6 months to get better and shouldn't be rushed, it's a major illness and takes time to get over.

I’ve got this now covid last week and pneumonia this week! Never felt so ill! I also had pneumonia in Jan so this is the 2nd time now along with about 6 other bugs I’ve caught in between, I am utterly sick xx
