Fast heart rate with high temp but child seems ok? Advice needed!

My dd is 8 years old. Her 19 year old sister had a virus last week but is now better (so i assume its the same thing).

she has a temp of 40.2 i have been giving paracetamol and ibuprofen today. I was hugging her and i noticed her little heart was racing so i stuck the finger monitor my older daughter has (she uses it to measure oxygen as she has asthma and sometimes needs to keep an eye). Her heart rate is between 130 and 150.

BUT she is just happily sitting in my bed watching her ipad. Shes obviously unwell
but shes not acting as unwell as the temp would suggest!

i tested the thermometer on me and it brings up a normal temp so its not broken.

i am absolutely terrible at making these calls. Is this a doctor tomorrow thing? Or a call out of hours thing?

im not really sure how worried i should be with that temp without other symptoms!
Any advice would be appreciated!
thanks

Not sure about the heart rate thing, but is her temp responding to the meds? That’s probably what I would base my decision on. Also, how long she has had the temp for?

Why not call 111? You'll be fairly sure to get some reliable advice though you may have to wait a bit.

Call 111 - sounds a bit worrying and kids are well known for seeming 'fine' even though they're quite unwell. Hopefully nothing serious but with the high heart rate i'd want her checked out.

Normal for 9yo is up to 110. Fever raises heart rate in anyone. If she looks fine and is drinking well I'd recheck once fever comes down.

OrlandointheWilderness · 11/03/2024 09:23

How's the fever @Fluffyshoesandfleece?

ecuse · 11/03/2024 11:32

The moment might have passed and I am not a medical professional but I recorded very fast heart rate in my then 7yo a while ago and took her to paeds A&E. They said it can be a symptom of fever so they generally test with Calpol to see if when the fever goes down so does the heart rate. If yes, they don't worry if no, they look for the underlying cause of the high heart rate.

In her case the heart rate came down with the temp after a dose, then started to rise again as it wore off, so they said not to worry.

I wished I'd known that before as I could have tested that at home myself!

Hope she's okay this morning

When DD was in hospital recently her heart rate went up and the nurse said 'we'll give her paracetamol now as the fast heart rate is a sign that her temperature is on the way up'. There was no concern about the raised heart rate as it came back down again.

I've got DD at home with a high temperature. As long as paracetamol or ibuprofen bring it down and as long as she's not lethargic or any other worrying signs, it's watch and wait here.

With DD, paracetamol takes over an hour to start bringing her temperature down. Ibuprofen is quicker but I'll only give her that if she's willing to eat something straight before it to protect her stomach.

Thanks for the replies dd seemed ok that night but today got worse so i took her to the walk in the think its flu thats gone to a chest infection - although he couldnt actually hear anything in her chest. He couldnt get in touch with peadiatrics so we brought antibiotics home We are supposed to set an alarm for 1 am and if she seems worse take her to a and e. Not entirely sure what classes as worse she just asleep with her temp at about 40 .

How are things today OP?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/03/2024 14:57

Raised heart tears is completely normal with a high temperature.
