Scarlet Fever any tips?

My poor five year old has a nasty dose of scarlet fever, I'm sure the others will follow soon. Been to out of hours and on antibiotics since yesterday.

Today she is absolutely covered in red sore rash. Her mouth is awful.

Tried some ice lollies.

Anything else? Don't want to put anything on it that might make it worse. Would a nice bath help.

She's more sore than itchy. She says it stings.

Anyone? She's absolutely covered now. Head to toes. Face. Everywhere. NHS says not usually on face.

Can you call 111?

INeedNewShoes · 10/03/2024 21:15

How is she in herself?

Is her temp coming down with Calpol?

Have you checked the rash is blanching under a glass?

We've just got over a dose here.
It feels like a burning stinging pain. I found even light pj's covering me were almost unbearable.

Baths did help but showers weren't pleasant. Tbh nwe didn't wash as much as usual but that was also due to the extreme fatigue that seemed to go along with it.

DS and I had a few days of a very painful mouth and throat where swallowing saliva was sore. We lived off icelollies and ice cream.

We also after a week or so started peeling like we had bad sunburn. I'd read it was only on hands and feet but we had it everywhere. DS hands are still blistering 3 weeks on though his face has almost cleared up.
I'm not as bad as I did use moisturiser and skincare. A 10 year old was not so keen to.

I did put oil (jojoba) in our Baths which helped a bit.

When we saw the dr we were given penicillin for 10 days and told we could go to school/worl after 24 hours. But we felt awful for a fortnight.
Though DS and I do both have other health issues which may have prolonged our healing time.

It was mainly huge amounts of fatigue....it kept a 10 year old away from his PlayStation. A very sore throat for a few days and a rash everywhere that turned into peeling skin.

Hope your little one feels better soon. At least it is an illness you can only get once.

Four hours to 111 yesterday.

At two hours now but not sure if this is normal?

Yes blanching.

Temp ok just absolutely covered. Huge ulcers in mouth and even soles of feet and palms covered

Poxclin mousse helped a little here, and oat baths.

That sounds awful I’m sorry. I don’t have any particular tips for dealing with the symptoms as my DD was very fortunate as she wasn’t overly poorly with it and her rash looked quite bad but didn’t really give her any problems beyond a bit of itching. However just to say please make sure you have at least 10 days if antibiotics prescribed and if symptoms are still persisting after that then go back and get more. We were incorrectly only prescribed a 5 day course and it seemed to work but then it came back a week later 🙄 so do make sure it’s completely treated. Hope DC gets well soon.

That looks like the rash mine got when they had an allergic reaction to penicillin.

MillshakePickle · 10/03/2024 21:51

Dc1 had a bad dose of scarlet fever last spring. We did ice cream, ice lollies, milkshakes, smoothies etc whatever dc wanted even tried McDonald's and KFC to tempt them to eat something/anything. Did lots of baking and crafting as well.

Milkshakes were a bit of a hit same with smoothies as we made them together and added Peanut butter, yogurt, fresh fruit etc to try and get something mildly healthy down.

Tepid showers to help cool and sooth the rash, aloe Vera gel kept in the fridge helped. Had a laugh and turned it into a game. Lots of distraction and screen time because there is a time and a place and thay was it. Lived in pj's for 7 days.

Keep on top of medication and calpol for the fever and other symptoms.

How awful - I got scarlet fever last year and went to a&e and they injected me with penicillin shot and I had a drip (don’t know if they do this for kids) and within a couple of hours, I was much much better and sore throat didn’t hurt much (could eat properly when I got home from hospital as they let me leave - the previous 2 days I couldn’t eat anything as my throat felt like sandpaper). It was horrible - I tried to eat porridge, yoghurt but my throat was killing me even drinking water with every bite.

I was on penicillin tablets after my hospital trip until the dosage finished.

losthj · 11/03/2024 07:46

@Mairzydotes that's exactly what I said to out of hours. She is allergic to amoxicillin but is fine usually with clarithromycin which is what she has been given.

I'm going to pop her to GP this morning.

LeopardsRockingham · 11/03/2024 10:35

Oh wow, you can get it more than once😧
Our a&e said it was one and done.

DH had it as a child and didn't catch it but I did. I do have a compromised immune system though but hadn't had it before.

Hope your DD feels better soon.

foodglorious · 11/03/2024 12:16

My DD had it, ill try and find a picture.

She was covered head to toe, everywhere!

We got antibiotics which cleared her up pretty quickly

Thank you.

Been to doctors, they don't know, have done full assessment and photos and sending to specialist. I'm to take her back at 4 and see what she's like then.
