Over bred dogs

Watching crufts and thought I'd have a look at what dogs are up for adoption. I was disgusted to see the numbers of brachycephalic dogs with deformities, one in particular had a totally flat face which was asymmetric, others had odd teeth poking though.

Why are these breeds still allowed. Some people think the snuffling is cute, don't they realise that it's the dog struggling for breath. I got glared at by a pug owner when I told my grandson what the noise was.

I totally agree with you.

I agree with you too. I know a couple who have a lot of pugs! A lot of them have had to have operations to help them breath. Some pass out when they get excited. They are not a healthy breed... and they always seem overweight too.

I agree. I have a friend with a pug. I had an adopted mongrel with no breathing issues. One time my friend was at my house and my dog was sleeping. She asked me why my dog wasn't making any noise while she was sleeping and kept asking if she was okay. She thought that the noises that her pug made while sleeping because it was struggling to breathe were just normal noises that all dogs make.

The number of people who want to buy certain breeds including the brachycephalic ones have encouraged puppy farms churning them out in large numbers without any thought for health, or the type of homes they go to. Many were purchased during lockdown and now there are many in rescue requiring new homes.

There are current health tests and research ongoing to improve many of the brachycephalic breeds which should be applauded. Until you stop the puppy farms and those willing to purchase from puppy farms, including one off "breeders" who do it to make lots of money, the issues will still occur.

All dogs going forward to the groups at Crufts undergo a health check.

Crufts and those breeders who breed for health and temprement should not be tarred with the same brush as others.
