But WHY does nothing work? What is the reason?

I was supposed to have something delivered next week (paid for specific day delivery) This morning, I got a notification saying it's coming today (not convenient). Gave me the option to rearrange via the website tracking service, so I rearranged it - to come the day I originally chose and paid for.

Then I got a message saying they'd tried to deliver, and as I wasn't in, I can collect it from the depot. Great.

This is a very boring and only slightly irritating story but I wasn't surprised that the system doesn't work because nothing ever does, does it?

But why is that? Do you work inside one of these many companies whose online chat facilities don't make sense or where they just don't do what they're supposed to do?

I just can't work out where the root of the problem is. I know everyone will say 'budget cuts' or Brexit or cost of living or something but I don't understand where, in an example like the above, the actual glitch in the system comes from?

I feel your pain. I ordered an office chair. 10 days before it was due I had an e mail to say it was being delivered and that it could not be left in my safe place. Ball ache. I think the misconception is that everyone works from home.

I don't even mean deliveries particularly, I mean systems.

Why give the option to choose the day, and then come a different day? Why give the option to rearrange then ignore the rearrangement?

Everyone has a million examples of these kinds of interactions with companies but what causes them?

Several reasons
Over many years now

  • big bosses pay themselves huge salaries
  • They overload the essential staff
  • They don't listen when ground staff tell them their fancy new IT system doesn't work ( see also, Post Office)
  • The essential staff leave because they are pissed off
  • The big bosses tut and just tell the remaining staff to work harder
  • No one has the energy to complain to the big boss again about the IT that doesn't work because they aren't listened to anyway
  • The only staff left are overloaded, struggling and getting zero respect as well as being run ragged

Those who are able to go on strike do so.

Those who continue to get paid £900,000 for strategic stuff that has no impact on customers, continue in their happy way. While handing their mates contracts for a new IT system that won't work properly.

much money changes hands with tech that is rolled out without proper testing.
