Would you seek medical attention for a potentially broken finger?

For context I play a sport where I have historically broken many digits. I generally just tape them up and crack on. However, last November I'm fairly sure I broke my index finger and it is still knackered - still swollen and I can't use it for fine motor skills or opening cans etc.

Tonight I have either broken or dislocated the knuckle on my ring finger. I heard it crack so removed my rings straight away. It is very swollen from the middle knuckle down and has already started to go purple. We have no minor injuries open on a weekend but I could go on Monday morning for an x-ray but I don't know if I should bother as there's not much they can do anyway.

WWYD in this situation?

Get a good book. A bottle of water snd go to a and e. You are absolutely mad if you don't

You didn’t get your last broken finger looked at, and that has turned out very badly for you. I’m amazed that you’re now asking whether you should get this one looked at.

Yes, you should definitely get it looked at!!

Please just go to A&E today and get it x-rayed. Ignore they people who say they just buddy taped it. There is broken fingers and BROKEN fingers.

First time I broke my little finger I had it in a traction splint like this for three weeks...

It didn't heal perfectly and the consultant offered to re-break (in a different place) and pin it.

Second time I broke it I had my arm and hand in a cast for three weeks.

User532 I live in a rural county and all MIU are shut on a weekend which makes the a and e wait a long slog.

Long slog or not it needs seeing today

Toes and ribs are entirely different. There's nothing anyone can do about ribs anyway, and toes do not need to be used with the same dexterity and accuracy, or as often, as fingers.

This casual attitude to vital parts of the body is going to come home to roost for many people, who'll live to regret their earlier gung ho approach.

Edited

My fingers are fine now, and that was roughly 20 years ago.

Yes! A quick x-ray and you’ll know what to do. Even if A&E munir injuries can be quite snotty about minor injuries. However many hospitals have a minor injury dept and it’s with going.

I fell over and hurt my leg quite badly and never got it checked out. Still affects me 7 years later!

SoSteqnsed · 11/03/2024 09:46

Oh I see you’ve sought medical treatment - good 👍
