My 25yo sofa/suite still looks OK?

Or is it just that I see it every day so I still think it looks Ok?

It wasn't cheap, I think £4000 for 2 sofas and an arm chair, 25 years ago from John Lewis.

It's fabric with feather filled cushions.

The cushions are getting a bit thin and I was thinking about having them refilled, but not if its going to need replacing within a year or two

I know you can't really tell without seeing it, but is it possible it's still going strong?.

I am in a similar situation. Bought 25 years ago from JL. Still in v good condition. Haven’t dated because they were never particularly fashionable.
Hard to tell because I live with them but I think they are perfectly fine.

ssd · 08/03/2024 22:08

Ive been reading your op and wondering when the photo would appear. But you want to ask if your sofa looks ok without us seeing it?

🤣

@ssd quite 🤣

It would drive me mad to look at the same furniture for 25 years! But that's just me

Gardencentrevoucher · 09/03/2024 07:38

My parents suite is still in great condition after 30 years so I'd say perfectly possible yours is too. Its just a question of style and taste.

IncompleteSenten · 09/03/2024 07:39

It's possible. It's unlikely but it's possible.

User364837 · 09/03/2024 07:40

Why can’t we see it?

sonjadog · 09/03/2024 07:41

How could we possibly comment without seeing it?!

HJ40 · 09/03/2024 07:41

Let me just check my crystal ball...

MargaretThursday · 09/03/2024 08:25

I would say it is fine. It probably is.

But we're just getting rid of our 45yo one (23years owned by us) We got it from someone throwing it out when we had just got married and had no furniture.
I saw a nice sofa and chair at a charity shop and couldn't resist them a couple of weeks ago.

dh wondered why I wanted to get another when our current one is perfectly good.
I did point out that the cushions are worn in places so much it almost looks like it is meant to be a camouflage pattern, there's holes in several of the cushions, one of the feet drops off if you move it and the seat is held up with a piece of wood where it snapped about 4 years ago.

Dh is meant to be arranging the disposal of the old one, as he objected to the council charging £60to pick it up. Apparently he's going to see it up to get it in the back of the car. We only have a hacksaw.
How many weeks before I call the council anyway?

So I'm sure yours is fine. 😂

Mercurial123 · 09/03/2024 09:08

Why aren't you posting a photo? Is it outing?! Sometimes you live with something for so long you don’t notice how bad it's looking.

DontWasteMyTime · 09/03/2024 09:09

It looks great (in my imagination - where's the photo, so that we might offer an opinion?)

PuttingDownRoots · 09/03/2024 09:13

Furniture used to be built to last. Its perfectly possible your sofa is fine... but someone else's 10yo sofa isn't due to inferior build quality

@MargaretThursday

to save him bringing back a doggy pile of stuff, make sure he looks up the 'rules' of disposing of it at wherever he plans to take it. Theyre very strict at my council tip.

if I could pay the council £50 to come & collect it, I would. I can't because I live alone, have minimal use of one arm and live up a flight of stairs & it has to be kerbside by 7am & NOT overnight. Due to the council restrictions at the tip, I can't break it down & take it there, so I'm having to pay a licensed company to do it.

JugglingJanuary · 09/03/2024 09:25

@Sparetoes a photo would be good!

they used to make sofas that were comfortable & built to last. So yes, I imagine it's probably still fine, but perhsphs a bit tired looking. If I had a well built one I'd rather spend the money on getting it 'updated' (whatever it needs - new cushions, recovered etc than buying a new one. Not even 'good brands' make them like they used to.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/03/2024 09:27

My sofa is over 20 years old. I replaced the seat cushions last year (well overdue). It needs new loose covers (on my To Do list). It's fine.

My parents have had their sofas for 30-40 years. They've been reupholstered at least twice, possibly three times. All good.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 09/03/2024 09:30

I call my sofas a 'suite' and my kids kill themselves laughing....im glad im not the only one who still uses that term.

crimsonlake · 09/03/2024 09:33

My current settee must be around 20 years old, now a faded, somewhat battered, slouchy look going on. To be honest I prefer this look to a new immaculate settee, although I am aware that to others it might appear past it's sell buy date.
If I like something I tend to hang on to it, certainly not feeling the need to keep up with trends.

Dewdilly · 09/03/2024 09:36

My sofa is 30 years old. It’s fine, though I think the cushions could be replaced. It’s been re-covered once.

mnahmnah · 09/03/2024 09:52

DM got her sofa and arm chairs when I was a teenager 30 years ago. Still perfectly nice style wise and in good condition. You would never know they were that old.

Deliadidit · 09/03/2024 09:54

Come on OP! I came on this thread expecting to give you my expert opinion on whether your suite still looks ok and I can’t because there’s no pic! 😁

BarleyShuga · 09/03/2024 10:10

Sofas used to be built to last.
DP bought a suite for his first home, it's 45 years old and still going strong in a friend's house.
Ours are Ercol, immaculate after 25 years and 3 kids.

Quitelikeacatslife · 09/03/2024 10:15

Our 2 sofas are 20 years old. They look ok, had replacement cushions about 5 years ago. They are not fashionable but not grim. I would like to change them but decided not to do it few years ago as kind of happy we can eat in there sometimes and I don't stress and now can't afford it at the moment and they are comfy.

zingally · 09/03/2024 11:23

My mum still has a small settee that belonged to her grandparents! Well, they've been dead for getting on for 40 years, and goodness knows how long they had it first!
I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was 50+ years old.
It got re-covered, and the cushions restuffed about 20 years ago, but is still in great nick.

Chewbecca · 09/03/2024 11:28

Mine is over 20 years old and was very good quality - Multiyork (RIP). It's still solid and very comfy but the fabric looks grubby and a bit greasy in high use areas (like the arms). It's getting replaced this year.
