Where to stay in Italy for walking, pool and old town??

I've booked flights to and from Rome in FOUR DAYS..and have totally dithered about where to stay so haven't booked anywhere yet.

We'll spend a couple of days in Rome but after that, is there anywhere within two hours train journey of Rome that would have the following sort of holiday:

Hotel with a pool in scenic surroundings
Walking distance to a nice 'old town'
Nearby countryside, mountains or countryside so I could go on a few (-5km) walks

We don't want the cost of hiring a car so would rely on public transport or walking

Tivoli? You can get there by train.
If you go to the Villa d'Este don't forget your National Trust card!

Never been to Rome but would struggle to see any city in 2 days
I would do the full 4 days in Rome.

Is op there for 4 days or is she leaving in 4 days?

I'd stay in Rome and maybe do a day trip to Tivoli or Ostia Antica. Easy to do 5km walks without going anywhere. Get metro and do some walks on Appian Way and visit the catacombs.

Ah she said in four days. But in my defence she also said she was only intending to stay in Rome a couple of days.

You may or may not have a point there. You could spend far longer than two days in Rome and still only scratch the surface.
But, in these internet days, the Big Attractions tend to be book-in-advance so OP may only get the chance to see street life, churches, etc.

MadKittenWoman · 08/03/2024 20:08

Why do people do this, trying to squash too much into a short time? Spend the 4 days in Rome and enjoy the experience!

Sorry I'm just catching up with these replies! I am going for 8 days. I have been to Rome before, used to have family there for many years.

I live in the city centre of a big UK city so definitely wanting to get away from urban, city life and enjoy sleeping without ear plugs for 6 days 😁

I've never heard of Tivoli before, thanks for the pp who suggested that

Another vote for Tivoli. Can go to the Villa d'Este, Hadrian's Villa and lovely walks through the gorge.

But honestly I'd do 4 days in Rome and 2 in Tivoli. There's so much to do in Rome.
