How much for a diamond ring?¡

My old engagement ring.....
I know i wont get much for it but even if i get a hundred pounds its better than gathering dust in a drawer. I have no daughters, and frankly it just holds bad memories so don't want to re fashion it.

Does anyone have an idea of what to expect value wise ?

It's a 0.75 carat princess cut soltaire diamond that cost £2500 nearly 25 years ago.....

Planning on taking it on Monday to a couple of places that buy diamonds and gold so I will update then!

I am hoping it will fund a couple of driving lessons at least for DS2

Please don't sell it to a cash for gold company. They will only pay scrap value.

Take it to your local auction house, preferably one that does specialist jewellery sales.

Value will depend on the carat of gold the diamond is set in, the clarity / cut / carat of the diamond itself, and various other factors such as whether the setting is classic / fashionable right now / dated.

Can you post a pic?

You will get much more on EBay than that - probably £400-500 if it's a good one

Gold prices are high at the moment so if its gold that will go in your favour. The scrap price is around £37/gram for 18ct gold

It might be worth getting a few prices from different jewellers before committing or selling at auction (although the auction would obviously have some fees to pay)

Here's a photo.
Might be a bit blurry.

It's allegedly a "good" stone with decent clarity etc however I guess all jewellers will say that when selling you a diamond! And unless you know your stuff well you could be buying a piece a glass !

I had wondered if an auction house would be interested in one item of jewelry instead of a bundle or something of significant value . Maybe its worth a punt for an extra 50 quid.

Pleased to say I have upgraded the man and the ring!

I will come back and let you know how it goes next week!

You would get a good price for that, it's a decent size diamond and gold (if that's what it is) fetches a good price these days.
Ebay could definitely be an option. I would get it properly valued first so aside from knowing the value you would have the paperwork to prove it's genuine.
For comparison my small .25 carat princess cut ring cost £300 secondhand 15 years ago.

blackcherryconserve · 08/03/2024 18:09

It's a lovely ring.

Pay for a written (insurance) valuation and sell it on eBay.

I sold mine, was surprised how much I got (£1.5k) as all the jewellers offered me £100 to take it.
I had the original spec from the jewellers it was bought from because my ex asked (via his solicitor) to include it in the divorce settlement Grin

It won't be an extra fifty quid difference OP.

What area do you live in? I can perhaps recommend some auction houses for you to approach. They will be happy to take a single item, doesn't need to be massively high value or a bundle.

Assuming that is an 18ct gold .75 carat at maybe SI1 grading (slightly included diamond), and in the normal range of finger size, I'd expect it to fetch around 500-700. Possibly more, given that it's a classic cut and setting.

Thanks Allblackeverything, Ive contacted McTears in Glasgow and they have estimated 600 to 800, so I think I will take it in and let them have a proper look at it .

The gold place I took it to offered me less and said that it was good stone and I actually advised me to take to an auction house !

Did you get a certificate with the diamond? Or do you have the original receipt with details on? Either would help you get a better price.

WAGGINGTONGUE · 12/03/2024 14:34

is it 18ct gold, it looks it?

yeah you could get a good price on ebay for that

VenusClapTrap · 12/03/2024 14:44

Fantastic! McTears are a reputable auction house, you'll be in good hands with them. Fingers crossed you get a great price for it 🤞🏻
