Whatever happened to Club Sandwiches?

When I was a teenager, my friends and I used to go to this American style diner in town for birthdays. We thought we were so sophisticated ordering steak and ribs, and all you can eat salads.
I always used to have a club sandwich and fries.
I thought I would try and book somewhere with a similar vibe for an old friends get together as we all have big birthdays this year - sadly the place we used to go is long gone.

I’m imagining dark wood, light up Route 66 signs, Coke in glass bottles, burgers, ribs, steak (extra points for T bone steak), Caesar salad, ranch dressing - and of course, club sandwiches cut into 4 triangles and each pronged with a cocktail stick.

Burgers are easy enough to find, but club sandwiches and all you can eat salad bars in particular seem to have vanished off the face of the earth.

Does anyone live near the sort of restaurant I mean? Is it an impossible dream (in the UK at least)? Will I never taste a club sandwich ever again?

Can confirm that Mollies do a decent club sandwich, had one a couple of weeks back!

SpanielLover2023 · 11/03/2024 11:44

I had one last week, was on the menu at a spa. Delicious it was.

Raizin · 11/03/2024 16:21

M&S have them. God knows how much they are in there now, as I recall they were one of the pricier sandwiches before inflation! They taste good though 😆

Pret do a Super Club sandwich, it is really good.

GasPanic · 11/03/2024 16:34

They did an exclusive deal with hotel room service.

I agree, it’s been my favourite for years, but it’s not a true club sandwich as it only has 2 slices of (untoasted) bread.

A club sandwich is a standard item on hotel room service menus. Might make it an expensive sarnie though!

Not sure where in the country you are, but near me we have OK Diners… one in Derby and one in Cannock. American themed diners and do club sandwiches.

Ezriv · 13/03/2024 10:43

Check out Cattlemens Grill Harrogate, not the club sandwich you’re after however think big portions, the best ribs ever and a 20oz T-bone steak! This has a Wild West kind of theme and you will not be disappointed! They also have a 96oz steak challenge that was recently shown on Married at first site UK!

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 15/03/2024 09:53

OMG Is the Cattle men's still open?

I thought it had changed into a fish restaurant.

JellyComb · 15/03/2024 10:42

OK you need to go to a branch of the Cosy Club! They do a nice club sandwich and the surroundings and ambiance are quirky and eclectic. Not expensive.

Dotted all over the country. https://cosyclub.co.uk/locations/

The OK Diner closest to me (Casterton on the A1) is absolutely disgusting. We used to take the kids when they were little but its not a place for a celebration / meet up. The food is gross.

Ezriv · 15/03/2024 12:14

Still open! It’s been open 40 years this year!

buffyslayer · 30/05/2024 14:22

I had one today!

Just sayin'. They're not exactly hard to find

That is not a proper club. The bread needs to be freshly toasted.

Davros · 31/05/2024 19:46

It ain't bad for a supermarket and it's called "club"

This is nothing like the club sandwich meant in the OP

I also love a Club sandwich. As others have said you often get them in hotels, golf clubs & spas but harder to find in cafes/ restaurants. I had a nice one recently but it was at a country club type of place so only open to members/ guests. If I recall correctly it was grilled chicken, bacon, avocado & mayo. I’ve never comes across egg in one & yes the bread must be toasted! Surprised Pret & M&S can call theirs a Club.

ilovepixie · 31/05/2024 20:07

I thought a club sandwich was chicken lettuce under bacon. No mention of egg.

Davros · 31/05/2024 21:00

I think the bread in the M&S one is toasted, but not freshly obviously

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/05/2024 21:01

Tesco sells chicken club sandwiches. Far too bready for my taste.

They also sell “Finest” gammon, egg and chip sandwiches. Eeeewww.

Yeah there was a big discussion at the start of the thread over egg or not and in what form!

Must admit the sandwich was delicious and the egg was a nice addition
