World book day

user1578 · 07/03/2024 07:55

My ds can be very nervous and was reluctant in previous dressing up days. This year I have been talking about World Book Day quite in advance to get him excited and for the first time he picked up a character and was looking forward to going as that (Mr Penguin).

School have, however, decided to do a pj day instead! I just know he is not going to go in his pj-s, and neither would I to be honest, as they are just not the right clothes for the weather...
I'm sure most kids will still have fun, and they are probably doing because of COL.

Anyway, would enjoy reading what your little ones are going as and if you made or bought their costume. I do love all that.

Sorry for the typos in the OP.

If he doesn't want to go in pyjamas put him in trackies and a long sleeve top (tell him it's a non uniform day). It's basically the same thing.

Coolblur · 07/03/2024 08:51

DS has never done the world book day dressing up thing, nor does he wear pyjamas on PJ days (ironic now that he needs to be forced to get dressed at the weekends!) It's his choice and I respect that.

Sometimes I think the point of World book day gets lost in the panicked excitement over costumes. He knows what the day is really all about, and had books ready to take with him for the days reading activities.

I hope your DC enjoys the day and appreciates what it's about.

Wish our school had asked them to bring books or asked them to work on a little home project... Sounds fun!

Email specifically said pyjamas or uniform. Dropped him off in uniform and we only saw kids in oodies (is that what they are called- oversized fleece things). Hopefully, he won't be the only one in uniform and regret it. I do worry about these things. Lol.

children asked to dress as adjectives! Sleepy (pjs) and elegant (lovely dress) so nice and easy. Lots of sporty, magical and sleepy children at the gate 😁

@ellesbellesxxx sounds good! Something right for everybody.

DS' school do pjs (or onsie) too, I homemade DD a costume which she has rejected in favour of her generic princess tesco dress haha - i saw some very cool wednesday adams' on the school run!

JanewaysBun · 07/03/2024 09:22

I like the adjectives idea

DS is off to school as Horrid Henry. Not sure how many more years I'll be able to persuade him to dress as a book character when the rest of the class just wear football kits. There were lots of Wonkas there this morning.

There were a load of little Wonka's in our school today too

My DC are adults now but I remember the horror of WBD!

However, I'm taking much joy from watching children from the local primary, all walking past my house to the library with their teachers, wearing normal clothes apart from the odd unicorn horn headband!

Can't wait for them all to walk past, back to school, later this morning. They're all so excited!

Grabbing2024ByTheBalls · 07/03/2024 10:02

I took a ladybird to school this morning (What The Ladybird Heard) Smile

I hate the anxiety of dressing up too. It's our first fancy dress world book day as their previous school didn't do it, they always did something in school such as painting t shirts with pictures of their favourite characters etc. Anyway I've sent in a stick man who has worn his costume every evening this week and wanted to sleep in it too (I might let him tonight if he asks again). And a Spiderman who has never cast his eye over a Spiderman book in his life (or any other book for that matter ...). I'll be glad when it's over.

Fridaysgirl17 · 07/03/2024 10:11

Our school is doing a cozy day, so some comfy clothes & they are having a book sale to raise funds for charity & my son's class is going on a trip to the library so a fun filled day for him (we are in Ireland & personally I was delighted they weren't doing dress up as my son wanted to go as the captain of the Titanic, Edward Smith & trying to get the costume was proving difficult)

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 07/03/2024 10:13

Ds went as Monkey D Luffy from the one piece manga.
I know not a traditional book, but he's Japan obsessed. 😂

Shame about the PJs! Maybe they thought they were saving parents money.

cannaecookrisotto · 07/03/2024 10:14

DD went as Mrs Wormwood - Matilda's mum 😂.

SugarMitts · 07/03/2024 10:16

Our school has done a ‘bedtime reading’ theme, so pjs and take their favourite bedtime story - much easier!
Although I did agree it’s not really the weather for pjs so mine have their fluffy onesies on over the top with instructions not to take them off (they definitely will!)

Monkeybutt1 · 07/03/2024 10:22

DS is year 6 so its his last WBD as his high school doesn't do anything.
He loves it and has gone as Jeremy Clarkson, jeans, white scruffyish shirt and a round cushion shoved up it for a belly, watch and friendship bracelets on his wrist. We did buy a Jeremy Clarkson mask. He is a huge fan of his and reads his books.
His school have said dress up, wear Pj's or dress as a word.
They have World Book week where they have a book swap, an author has come in and launched a writing competition, reading breakfast (this was more for the younger ones) and a quiz.

Longlive · 07/03/2024 10:50

7 year old DGD who is history mad has gone as Mary Queen of Scots. 😃 the adjective was ' unfair'

Needmorelego · 07/03/2024 10:53

I don't understand the "dress as an adjective" themes.
It's World BOOK Day not World WORD Day 🤔

It would be good to see some pictures on this thread (with the faces obliterated).

PeppermintParty · 07/03/2024 11:11

I can't post any photos as my DC are adults now, but I have fond memories of dressing DD as Alice in Wonderland.

Tryingtogetitright · 07/03/2024 11:12

My DS never wanted to wear PJs for PJ day at school, I'd send him in uniform but put PJs in his bag in case he changed his mind when he saw all his friends wearing them - something to consider for next time? We always have to buy new PJs for PJ days - the ones they wear to bed are always so scraggy but soft through loads of washing! Hope your little one has a great day. My DD has gone as Rapunzel (supermarket costume we already had) and DS is going as the Wimpy Kid (black trousers/white top and a cardboard mask I made - I'm quite proud of it!)

World book day
user1578 · 07/03/2024 11:51

Brilliant cardboard mask and great ideas for both of them.

Definitely will take your advice re putting his pyjamas in his bag for next time. I had also bought new ones, just in case. So still an expense, even though I guess the school were trying to save parents money.
