How many kettles to fill a bath

I’ve got no hot water for 2 weeks as boiler has broken. Those of you who have had a bath in this situation, can you remember how many kettles worth it took?

Going to echo a lot of other posters and say basin wash but get yourself a free pass or a cheap gym pass at a gym (doesn't need to be a swimming pool!) but honestly say to a friend or neighbour we've all been there and it's horrible after a few days!

MrsElsa · 06/03/2024 18:40

Gyms usually offer trial memberships or day passes for free. Also hotels with pools usually have "health clubs" and will do free day passes to prospective members. Lots of Hilton hotels have this.

Also try local University gym etc.

Or failing that some service stations have showers but can be a bit rough

Good luck!

Measure your bath for a rough estimate -
volume = width x length x depth (so assume a water depth). 1m3 = 1000 litres to convert to number of kettles
short answer though - a lot!!

When our boiler was out one winter I managed to shower with a kettle full of water in a big pan, mixed cold in so it was the right temp, then jug water over my self to wet hair & body, lather up, then a couple of jugs to rinse. I couldn’t condition my long hair as well unless I had a second kettle though.

wash at the sink
My DF was fond of telling me that on the passage to India ladies had to keep themselves clean on a saucerful of water a day. I do think their standards of what consitutes clean may have been different to ours, but the fact remains you can get perfectly clean with a sink full of water, which would only be 1 kettleful.
Washing hair esp if long would be more of a challenge, but possible with cold water I think.

No shower at work?
Check places like Wowcher or voucher codes for cheap or free guest passes to private gyms. Pure gym often offer no joining fee and no contract period so it might be worth joining for a month if you’ve a cheap one nearby.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 06/03/2024 18:48

I had to do this and was trotting up and downstairs when it occurred to me I could plug the kettle in on the landing and fill it from the bathroom sink.

Octavia64 · 06/03/2024 18:50

I do wild swimming.

Can report it does NOT get you clean. If anything you smell worse afterwards. Depending on the lake/river you swim in obviously.

penelopepinkbott · 06/03/2024 19:17

A lot of leisure centres have showers in changing rooms. A lot you'll be able to get into for free.

Winnading · 06/03/2024 19:50

Ah, too many to count. I did this recently as my boiler threw some kind of shit fit. I put cold in the bottom of the bath so as not to warp it with boiling water. I ended up with a freezing shower instead. I felt icky all day. And cold.

VenusClapTrap · 06/03/2024 20:03

I can remember having baths made from kettles when I was a child and the boiler was broken. I remember they were shallow and unsatisfying.

Around 500 more than you can be bothered to boil ime. Also by the time you're boiling the kettle for the 4th time, the water in the bath has cooled down enough that it's pointless.

Make some friends who don't mind you nipping in for a bath.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 06/03/2024 20:31

If you have a puregym or one of the other pay monthly's it might be worth getting membership for a month. If you look up voucher/promo codes you can usually find a code that removes the joining fee.

Ha, I thought this might be the case that it would cool down before I’ve finished.

This would be me, at least it would keep me fit

Thanks for all your replies. I’m going to try the leisure centre tomorrow

when we were without hot water for a few days we had to resort to a bucket bath.

basically a couple of kettles of boiling water in a bucket. jug/cup to wet yourself. lather up with soap and then rinse it off with the rest of the water.

DrJoanAllenby · 06/03/2024 21:14

Use a sink. Strip wash. Much cheaper.

RagzRebooted · 06/03/2024 21:14

Silly question, but have you got a hot water tank? Like in an airing cupboard? If you have a combi boiler, you won't have but you mentioned economy 7 so it's possible you're still on the old style boiler with a tank. You may have an electric immersion heater (switch will be near the tank).

I didn't realise we had a working immersion heater in ours (we've been here 12 years but we rent) until our boiler died last month and the plumber put it on for me (has to be switched off after an hour or two, it eats electricity).

Strangeness · 06/03/2024 21:16

millions . It takes loads just to fill my foot spa.
when I moved into a building site with no bath /shower I used one of those rubber trug things to stand in and then a big jug to pour and a good scrubbing mit. It wasn’t too bad!
Like other posters suggest though, cheap gym is probably your best option.

Luckycloverz · 06/03/2024 21:18

Check local gyms too, ours has £3 Shower offer, no membership needed.

Poplolly · 06/03/2024 21:22

@RagzRebooted yes it’s a tank in the airing cupboard. I will try this, not sure if it will work though as there was some rather loud banging noises before it stopped working.
