What age to leave child at weekend for a work shift?

I'm getting to a place where things are managed better, long story, not the point.

I'd like to perhaps get a part time job in a local shop or some thing.

My kid is 11 at the end of march, so if I found a job that wanted me to do 6 hours on a Sunday, would you think 11 year old would be ok to make a sandwich, let dog up garden etc?

I have and 11yo and will leave him for an hour or so now but I think 6 hours is far too long.

Same here. I wouldn’t leave mine for 6 hours. But she is not the mature responsible sort… if you have one of those it might be different.

I would tend to agree - I’d be fine with an 11 year old walking home from school, or being alone at home between school and teatime. Personally I think 6 hours is a bit long without a parent, especially every week. I’d say 14 was a more appropriate age for that.

Do you have anyone they could hang out with? Grandparent/friend/aunt/cousins?

I think it’s a little too young if they’re not 11 yet and so in year 6.

There’s a big difference between year 6 and year 7 though so maybe in a year or so.

I leave my year 7 11 year old for a couple of hours but wouldn't be happy with all day, not least as I have no one near by he could contact for emergencies. Fortunately I can work from home so haven't had to yet. Interestingly he asked to go to holiday club over Easter as he finds it boring at home while I'm working.

No 11 is too young for a longer period of time. Sorry. That’s more like 13/14 age I’d say.

nervousskier24 · 06/03/2024 15:07

Can you not work whilst they're at school?

Whaleandsnail6 · 06/03/2024 15:09

6 hours is a long time alone and possibly a bit lonely if its regular.

We have been leaving a 14 and 13 year old when we have to for 5 hours, which I think is too long and I have now managed to change my hours at work so its only 2 hours.

Antears · 06/03/2024 15:11

I’m pretty laid back on these posts but 6 hours is a long time for an 11 year old.

Especially if on their own it can be really lonely too.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 06/03/2024 15:12

Depends on the kid, really. Are they comfortable with it?. Once my kids turned 11 & went to secondary school, they were pretty much left to their own devices during summer holidays & half terms whilst I was at work.

AlltheFs · 06/03/2024 15:15

Not a chance as a regular event. 14+ I would say as a regular activity.

MobileStationery · 06/03/2024 15:19

That's that answered then.

No jobs with weekend working.

Thanks. 😁
