Todays Budget has resulted in the average workers getting a load of money

A load of money back in their pocket. I believe the average is 1300 a year for a person on an average wage is a few quid short of 35,000.

That is a real saving

However, those paying tax but no NI as pensioners don't have to pay it or if you don't work won't get a penny of that. My OH and I left work years ago not reached state retirement age and won't gain a penny but we are really happy for the majority that work as work must be rewarded.

A lot of winners here. We are not for reasons as stated above but still happy with the budget, inc the extra money for the NHS and completing 200,00 extra operations a year and money for improved IT system.

I feel this budget is good for those in work and rightly so and those in work with children of up to school leaving age?

I'd rather pay higher taxes and have functioning public services, personally.

TBVH, I'd rather see workers benefiting from keeping more of their money in their pocket first. This encourages people to work, or worker harder and for longer hours resulting in higher tax revenues. /then these can be spent on the roads, pavements, NHS, education, etc

They will steal it back in other ways, don’t worry.

Rattle rattle.. you commented, I commented… we are all grown ups

Rather than trying to have a go at me, please do look up the word 'average.'

The budget is a total damp squib which even Tory MPs are struggling to promote.

What was most notable about it was the disgraceful delivery. By convention budgets are delivered in a serious manner without the usual Punch and Judy nonsense. This chancellor chose to use it as a vehicle for a stream of cheap gags and personal swipes. There was even a fat joke, ffs. The stench of decay coming from this government is suffocating, and there is no disguising it.

Again.. You commented, I commented… I know what the word ‘average’ means Thankyou very much. I didn’t have a go at anyone, I simply made a comment.

Chipsweep · 06/03/2024 14:48

If the Tories wanted to encourage people to work they would scrap the child benefit and tax free childcare tapers, properly fund childcare, make student loan repayments less punitive, fund the NHS properly so people don’t have to go off sick for ages waiting for treatment, and fund transport properly so people can get to work. Spoiler: they don’t

Bigcoatlady · 06/03/2024 14:48

@Singlespies as a worker I'm not qualified to comment on what would encourage people to reenter the workforce. But maybe @DistinguishedSocialCommentator could comment since she retired well before retirement age, what would encourage her to contribute more to the UK's productivity rather than simple take out in the form of pension for which she presumably received significant tax exemptions during her career and health and social care services as she gets older? Would greater flexibility in the workplace? More accommodations for older disabled workers? Or a higher tax burden on pensions and other investments to discourage people from taking early retirement help?

CeeJay81 · 06/03/2024 14:49

The average person doesn't earn 50k, well they certainly don't round here. The 2p N.I cut will save me very little, as a full time just above nmw worker.

StarlightLady · 06/03/2024 14:49

StrawberryEater · 06/03/2024 14:39

I really think Conservative HQ should invest in getting a writing consultant who can advise them on how to draft posts that one could actually believe were written by a real person.

You can’t have correct grammar and NI cuts! You’ll be wanting it fully costed next 😀.

Over40Overdating · 06/03/2024 14:49

What in the Tory baiting logic is this nonsense.

People on an average salary of £35k will be less than £500 better off.

Factor in the increase in mortgages thanks to Trussenomics, inflation, increased energy bills to line the pockets of mates of government ministers, cost of food & the general crushing cost of 14 years of Tory misrule and I don’t see a lot to be happy about.

I’d rather see no cut or even an increase if it got us back to feeling like we live in a country where we can thrive and prosper rather than barely survive thanks to Tory greed and incompetence. But that might just be me.

salcombebabe · 06/03/2024 14:49

Bigcoatlady · 06/03/2024 14:34

Makes no difference unless wages increase and inflation goes down - at the moment real terms incomes compared to CoL have been declining for years. We already had an NI cut in Jan and I don't know anyone who went on a spending spree in Feb as a result. And yup, the shortfall to fund public services is what matters - the planet is burning, the roads are knackered, there are wars on two sides of Europe, public transport doesn't exist where I live, there are epic housing shortages, half a million people live in temporary accommodation, the courts are in crisis, we don't know which police officers are rapists, NHS waiting lists are at record levels, my kids are being taught exam subjects by midday supervisors because there are no qualified teachers, my sector (MH) is more dangerous and scary than I've known it in 30 year, we are offering nothing to desperately ill people, numbers of people in the actual workplace are in freefall due to people retiring early due to disability. I can't see any cause for optimism. The only advice I'm giving my kids is keep up their languages so they have options to move abroad. I guess long-term we should be able to tackle immigration by being so epically shit no one wants to come here so there's that.

This ⬆️

Fair enough. But surely they can dig up enough pennies from the back of their sofa to hire someone to draft something that doesn’t look like a party political broadcast? And one which is not so easily disprovable to boot!

Its closer to the average here in London but my generation (or actually anyone below 50) is FURIOUS at the tories. whether we are paying off a mortgage or rent or received help from family, we all know the current housing situation is a disgrace. Even those of us who are luckier know how much our friends and colleagues suffer (simply because they weren't born in the right family etc).

our NI increases would be wiped out by the increases in our mortgage when it expires in July. In fact the two NI cuts this year directly corresponds to the increase in our mortgage.

Then tell your councillors to STOP throwing away council taxpayers' money and make everyone pay the full amount apart from the single house-holder.

Oh look. Someone who thinks that all those on benefits are feckless, scrounging layabouts.

THIS!

The budget's bullshit; you'd have to be a moron to think this will move the needle for anyone.

CeeJay81 · 06/03/2024 15:05

@fluffykittens208 London is not everywhere. Totally agree with the rest though. Housing is the main reason people are struggling full stop these days, it eats up so much of peoples wages. Unfortunately can't see anyone doing anything about it though. Social housing has been sold off and getting on the property ladder is impossible for many.

lechatnoir · 06/03/2024 15:05

I'll be £1.45 a month WORSE off. Presumably that's my fault for earning a pitiful £29k (and shock horror, managing to live on this in the SE 🙄!) . If only I worked harder like your 'average' person and earnt £50k then I would be rewarded with an extra £68.55 a month.

Fucking joke.

BlackBean2023 · 06/03/2024 15:06

I'm £62.83 a month better off (still eligible for full CBHIC so just the NI saving). Which should go some way to covering the increase of £80 a week on my childcare from next month... oh, wait.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 06/03/2024 15:10

Yeah I'm way better off............ 🤔

National Insurance changes since Autumn 2023 will save you...£8.10 every month in 2024/25

But frozen tax thresholds mean you pay an extra...£56.70 a month next year, across both income tax and NI, than if thresholds had increased with inflation as normal

In total that means you take home£48.60 less every month

blushroses6 · 06/03/2024 15:11

I’ll be taking £13.96 less home every month. My child’s nursery has increased by £10 a day.

So you don't think people work long enough hours or hard enough already? People in their prime working years generally only work part-time if they have caring responsibilities. Perhaps if the Tories funded childcare and elderly social services better, people (mainly women) would be able to work more.

I notice this also doesn't apply to you, given you retired early...

ETA - as someone else has pointed out, ill health is another reason to work part-time or not work at all. A reliable, fast, functioning NHS would help there.

Its becoming more like London everywhere. oxford is actually worse than london in terms of house price to income ratio. My colleague moved from coventry to london cos even though she is renting a room in london, she still has more left every month due to increase in salary. cos rent in coventry isn't exactly free.

EsmeShelby · 06/03/2024 15:15

Are you a bot? I'd rather pay more and have functional NHS schools police courts etc.
This is a terrible budget only concerned with headlines.
