Children's portions at Mother's Day lunch

I was looking at booking a local restaurant for lunch on Sunday and they're only offering a two or three course Mother's Day menu on the day. Looks great for adults but far too much food (and silly money!) for my 4 year old. It's generally a child friendly place so I'm wondering what the chances are they'll offer children's portions.

I'll pop in later to ask them but just wondering how other people rate my chances 😁

I'm pretty sure they will. There'll be loads of kids there, they'd be mad not to cater for them.

I mean it would be pretty silly not to - and if they say they aren't, I would point it out to them. I would hazard a guess that probably most mothers who will be going out for Mother's Day lunch will either have children under say 12 or will have adult children with grandchildren under 12. Most people will likely need a 'children's menu' and I'd imagine even many teens may not be thrilled with three courses of rabbit terrine, smoked trout with bramble compote, and a lemon posset or whatever they have on offer - they probably just want a burger.

I don't think it's a given. They'll have a children's menu but that will be nuggets/fish fingers, not child sized portions of the main menu.

It's a real bugbear of mine. I've only ever found one place that offered half portions of anything on the menu.

Just phone and ask. They should do small portions of the proper menu, not the usual crap on kids menus.

Wheeeeee · 06/03/2024 09:50

One of the reasons I like this restaurant is their children's menu is a bit better than the standard beige fare e.g. small portions of tomato pasta, roast chicken, fish and chips.
It's not gourmet but it strikes a nice balance

On this occasion I'd be equally happy if they could maybe offer a half portion of one of the pasta dishes on the adult menu, I just don't want to pay £30 for my 4 year old to eat five mouthfuls...

I’m sure they’ll have something whether it’s a full kids menu, half portions or the option to order just a main course without a starter. Mothers day is a family occasion!

Wheeeeee · 06/03/2024 09:52

Cross posted with you @Rosesanddaisies1 - as I said, I'll pop in later to ask them (I'll be walking right past the door!), I was just idly wondering about other people's experiences and expectations 🙂

I think it would be very strange for them not to give a child the children's menu juts because it's Mother's day

DappledThings · 06/03/2024 09:53

I'd assume the normal children's menu is also available. Loads of places are shit at putting the children's menu on their website even though it exists.

spidermonkeys · 06/03/2024 09:55

Most places will. I don't know how anyone on Mumsnet could possibly help answer this one!

INeedNewShoes · 06/03/2024 10:00

If they don't offer children's portions I'd just ask for an extra plate and give the child some of mine.

I'm not looking for help - I made it perfectly clear in my opening post that I will be going in later to find out. I was just curious as to what other people had experienced or would expect. That's why I posted in chat....to chat.

Yeah, I'd do this too. I have a fussy 4 year old so generally just share with him and, if possible, get some bread or chips which he might deign to eat.

Wheeeeee · 06/03/2024 10:09

Sounds like there's a lean towards 'yes they will' - I will find out at lunchtime and report back 😁

I'd be very surprised if the normal children's menu isn't available. The normal lunch a la carte may well be too.

RoseNy · 06/03/2024 10:18

Your only problem will be getting a table at such short notice

I can see online that they have availability, at least for now, as does at least one other local restaurant, but I prefer the first one if possible 🙂

The a la carte definitely isn't, that part at least is specified on the website.

Portions sizes nowadays are huge so just ask for an extra plate and put some of yours on it for your child.

Wheeeeee · 06/03/2024 18:37

Good news for me - they are offering the children's menu 🙂 DS will be delighted!
