'Unprecedented'

Does anyone else find this word jarring since 2020?

I don't think I'd ever really heard it until Covid and lockdown but now I seem to always focus on it when it gets said.

Yes, yes, yes, ‘unprecedented’ is bloody everywhere now, sets my teeth on edge, enough now

DoubleOuch · 05/03/2024 22:03

"Incredibly". Jesus. Every politician just has to say that their team/the nurses/doctors/whoever they want to grovel to are working "incredibly" hard.

Its so bloody condescending.

I hate the word 'unprecedented' since covid.

See also the phrase "it is with a heavy heart" which everyone seemed to use when they closed because of restrictions.

ChristianHornersGlisteningFinger · 05/03/2024 22:24

Yes! The over-use of this word is indeed unprecedented!

Maddy70 · 05/03/2024 22:25

I'm ancient. It has always been used regularly as far as I can remember

WhateverMate · 05/03/2024 22:27

I always avoid using the word 'unprecedented', because my brain tries to force me to say 'un presidented' 😳

Tumbleweed101 · 07/03/2024 00:18

I'm glad it isn't just me!

I'm sure it has always been a perfectly nice, regularly used word. It's just since covid I seem to focus on it every time. Everything seemed to be unprecedented that year and quite often since.

Irrationally, I can't bear 'wild'; it seems to be everywhere, rather like 'unprecedented'. People become lazy with language use and it is incredibly irritating. I seem to lose focus when everything is continuously described in the same terms.

Sparklfairy · 07/03/2024 00:27

Exponentially is a covid word too. Must admit I haven't heard it much since but at one point it felt like every single day

HauntedBungalow · 07/03/2024 00:29

IN THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES

XenoBitch · 07/03/2024 00:35

Yes, I had thoughts of Covid when I saw the thread title.

HauntedBungalow · 07/03/2024 00:49

I've not heard it in a while as it goes.
