Paid less than team

Does anyone work in a manager/leader role but is paid less than the people who work for you? So essentially you are accountable for a broad portfolio of work - and are involved in all areas, but those delivering the individual aspects under you are paid more? Wondering whether I'm being foolish to stay.

I do, I'm a manager but earn less than some of my team.
I know a lot of people don't share my view, but it doesn't bother me.
I hire people who are excellent in their field, who have studied and trained for many years and I want to hire the besr people. Yes I manage them and have a lot of other responsibilities they don't, but equally I couldn't do their roles and appreciate the hard work they put in to make my life easier.

context is key here. I have managed individuals on higher base salary than me in the past - they had much more experience and had a specialist role, but no desire or aptitude for management. Longer term my salary surpassed theirs, but at that moment in time I earned less. I was eligible for bigger bonuses, but in years of poor company performance that wouldn’t close the gap.

Also when managing global teams - us salaries are WAY higher, so even without extra experience a team member might be earning more than me.

Well it is the CS in an area difficult to recruit - so the salary bands were changed to offer an uplift after I was employed. My role isn't simply ensuring delivery - but also horizon scanning and understanding new policy to ensure direction of travel and projects build all of that into it. I need to understand what it is they are doing because I have to make the ultimate decision. Re-draft their documents etc to ensure suitable for audience.

I've managed US teams before and yes the salary was higher - but that was expected.

Apply for a job in your own team?

I've managed people who earn more than me when they have specialisms.

Your situation does sound unfair.

I used to manage a team and everyone I managed was paid more than me. It was because I was recruited into the organisation and the rest of the team had TUPE'd from an organisation with higher wages. I found it frustrating as it wasn't highly skilled roles. I eventually left for another role within the organisation. Same pay but no managerial responsibilities.

Do you have the same technical specialism as the rest of the team then? If so that sounds off to me.

I have been in that situation where people who worked for me had a higher salary. I suppose one thing I would ask is over time , in your role will you catch up / overtake those people with your salary.

BresciaBike · 05/03/2024 21:42

Could you actually do their jobs? Management is a skill but there are many rarer skills/expertise.
