My son is turning 18. Do I need to tell HMRC that he is staying on in school to get child benefit?

I believe he will get it until August but I'm not sure if I need to tell HMRC and if I do, how do I do it?
He'll go to Uni in the autumn so I know we won't receive it then

When DD recently turned 16 they sent me a letter to.ask if she was staying in Education. I thought it stopped at 18?

You should have confirmed between y11 & y12 he was staying on for 2 years, and they will assume that is the case.
You may get another letter this summer (because if staying on for a 3rd year at 6th form he would continue to qualify).
So you shouldn't have to do anything.

Ok you can claim until they are 20 (didn't know that). I'm assuming you already told them he was at college when he turned 16 so I guess you don't need to tell them unless it changes.

We got a letter the summer after they turned 16. We were not claiming but you need to tell them if they are staying in education after 16. So I would ring them if you did not get this.

It will automatically stop in Aug as he will no longer be eligible once he leaves 6th form.

They will send a letter saying it is stopping and to let them know if staying on for a 3rd year.

Thanks all.

I think you can get it until child is 20 in some circumstances but not if they are in uni.

I think you can claim until they are 20 if they're in further education but not higher education.

I don't think so. His birthday is in a few days.

I think it's as someone else said, we got a letter when he was turning 16 and we obviously said that he will be staying on in school for two more years.

I’ve never had a letter for 17 yo DD. I’ve had to contact them the last two years to tell them she’s still in non advanced education or else it would be stopped (this is Scotland)
