Worried sick about DH

Goldenthigh · 05/03/2024 15:25

He's had an array of symptoms on and off for a couple of months now. Diarrhoea, bloating, stomach pain.
its ramped up over the last couple of weeks to the extent that he's in constant pain, has no appetite and is losing weight. He saw an online GP and has a gastroenterologist appt in a couple of weeks but today the pain is so bad he's gone to an urgent care centre. They're holding him for obs at the moment.
what is worrying both of us is that his dad and uncle have both died from gastric cancers - pancreatic and bowel.
His dad died very recently so we can't say anything to his family about it yet so I'm just worrying with nowhere for it to go! I'm sure it will be fine, just wanted to get it out

You must be so worried, though there are lots of other things that could cause his symptoms. Definitely better not to wait several weeks though, sounds like he is in the right place. His dad must have been a fair bit older than your dh when he got sick, so I would say the odds are in his favour.

he is in the right place and at this time… that’s what is what to focus on

Goldenthigh · 05/03/2024 16:03

He's been sent to a hospital with a surgical assessment unit. Maybe they are thinking appendicitis?

Oh he's had the same as me, same time length as well. Rare pain free day today.

Well they're taking it seriously at least and it's being investigated 💐

JennyGracexx · 05/03/2024 16:49

Hope he's ok. It could be anything so try not to think of the worst case scenario

Hope you get some relief from yours @SheepAndSword, it's been utterly miserable.

Those were the symptoms my adult DS2 had.. it was Ulcerative Colitis. There are other gut illnesses that have the same symptoms as cancer so try not to panic (UC isn't great ..it's lifelong but there are meds and surgeries to help)
Hang in there... he's being checked out and that is great.

QuestionableMouse · 05/03/2024 17:01

They were my symptoms for gluten intolerance and now I'm off gluten my gut problems have 99% vanished, and the 1% is related to my period!

Hope he's okay!

Moier · 05/03/2024 17:12

Could be IBS / Diverticulitis.. believe me they are both painful and cause diahorrea.. wishing him a good outcome.

LatteFlatte · 05/03/2024 17:26

Sounds scary. He's being assessed so that's a positive. Could be appendicitis?

SheepAndSword · 05/03/2024 18:56

@Goldenthigh I hope you can see him soon - if nothing else they should be able to assuage the pain until they find out what's wrong

Goldenthigh · 05/03/2024 19:39

Seen consultant, no diagnosis yet but they are satisfied it's nothing that needs to be done today so he's coming home with meds and urgent referral for endoscopy and colonoscopy.

I had a CT scan when I had appendicitis. Don't worry about going back, that's my two penny worth.

what meds?

flavourshot · 06/03/2024 07:58

what meds?

Anti-sickness and stronger painkillers. Don't know any more than that. The consultant told him he'd be seen within 2 weeks for the endoscopy and colonoscopy which of course is ringing all sorts of alarm bells. But I'm trying to ignore that and not put the cart before the horses.

I had the same pattern of symptoms. Had an endoscopy and colonoscopy, same day, one after the other on the two week pathway. Results immediately and I had diverticulitis. Still waiting to see a consultant two years on but that 'flare' did die down after a few weeks and I put the weight back on. I lost one and a half stone in 3 weeks as I was in horrendous pain every time I ate. Buscopan helped with painkillers.

I've had the odd pain since but make sure I drink lots of water and try to avoid constipation.

SheepAndSword · 06/03/2024 16:48

@Goldenthigh is he a bit better today?

I guess he was put on something like codeine/co-cocodemol

MirandaWest · 06/03/2024 16:51

It sounds similar to DS who has Ulcerative Colitis. He had an urgent referral for a colonoscopy which was within 2 weeks and he was diagnosed there and then. Getting the right meds is proving tricky but he’s keeping on going and better than he was 6 months ago.

He was earlier but is in a lot of pain again now. He can't take codeine without it making him nauseous so just on paracetamol at the moment.
diverticulitis seems to match a lot of the symptoms.

Turmerictolly · 07/03/2024 07:34

Maybe he could talk to his GP about using Buscopan.

urrrgh46 · 07/03/2024 07:53

@MirandaWest my Ds now 21.5 was dx with ulcerative colitis age 17 via an emergency admission and colonoscopy. It took 17 months to get him into remission with a combo of mezavant, azathioprine and the life changer Adalimumab. If the first and second line drugs aren't working very well I'd tell you and your ds to push for a biologic. After a year they tried taking him off it and he relapsed within weeks!

Goldenthigh · 08/03/2024 15:47

Endoscopy and colonoscopy booked in for next week. Fingers crossed we get some answers after that.
