How have we got to a point where an iron comes with instructions to not iron clothes while wearing them. Seriously. How?

Wtf?
This is something people need to be told?
I'm starting to think the joke about a warning on packets of nuts that reads caution may contain nuts wasn't actually a joke!

I've got a mini fridge for taking on holiday etc. It has a sticker on the back saying 'Do not use underwater'

I'd love to know WHY they feel that's a necessary warning to put on it

IvorTheEngineDriver · 05/03/2024 13:49

I thought instructions saying "do not adjust the steering wheel while the car is in motion" were unnecessary until a guy giving me a lift one day actually did that as we were approaching a roundabout.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the human race.

JimBobsWife · 05/03/2024 13:49

Cos an eejit has already done it and then sued the iron manufacturers.

IDARIS · 05/03/2024 13:50

😂

daisydalrymple · 05/03/2024 13:51

🤣🤣🤣

Who microwaves washing powder?

Apparently behind every warning label there is a backstory

I fear this is why. 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/03/2024 13:58

Same reason I read of a microwave coming with instructions not to use it for drying your wet dog.
IIRC that was across the pond.

Pushtart · 05/03/2024 14:00

for legal reasons... and stupidity reasons

heatherwithapee · 05/03/2024 14:03

DS is in the armed forces. You'd be surprised at how many recruits sport burns on their neck from trying to press the collar of their shirts whilst wearing them 😂

That's because there is metal in the security sticker - it's what sets the alarm off if you take it out past the barriers without it being deactivated by staff. And they use the same security stickers for everything, so including some items you may microwave. So you'd want to make sure you took the sticker off/removed the packaging before you whacked it in a microwave!

FrippEnos · 05/03/2024 14:07

Its from The USA where people sued companies for hot drinks and hot baked apple pies, and in one case for standing on the washing machine door.
If its not explained you can be sued.

FrenchandSaunders · 05/03/2024 14:07

I recently bought a new dishwasher ... in the instruction booklet there was a troubleshooting page. "If your machine smells, ensure you have put it on a cycle and washed the dishes".

Diskobobulated · 05/03/2024 14:12

@heatherwithapee or flatten their beret!

heatherwithapee · 05/03/2024 14:29

@Diskobobulated Yeah - that too 😂.

OP - packets of peanuts say "may contain nuts" as peanuts aren't actually nuts, and so people who can eat peanuts but not, say, hazelnuts need to know about the risk of cross contamination. Similar for tree nuts at risk of cross contamination from other tree nuts or peanuts.

When you have a peanut or nut allergy it's important to eat as many other nuts as possible to prevent further allergies developing, and so the search for packets of nuts without may contain warnings is a constant topic on nut allergy groups.

It's important labelling that helps keep those with severe allergies safe, not something to be sneered at because people are stupid.

Similarly, @FrippEnos the usual reference to people in the US suing for hot drinks often refers to a woman who was served a coffee at a McDonald's drive through that was at an unsafe temperature. She suffered life changing burns and rightly received a large pay out.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/03/2024 14:46

What's an iron?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/03/2024 14:47

Seriously I expect sales of irons have very much reduced over the last 20 years+ and there will be significant numbers of people who 1. don't own one and 2. have never used one

ohthejoys21 · 05/03/2024 14:49

Fear of litigation.. laughable

IncompleteSenten · 05/03/2024 14:49

I didn't know that about the nuts.

The coffee one I'd heard about. It was superheated way beyond boiling point I think. There's hot and then there's that! Nobody would expect hot to mean cup of lava!

Don't submerge your fridge or microwave your dog! Yikes.

What's an iron?

It's a little thing that gets hot when you plug it in and you use it to smoothen your embroidery and cross stitch projects.

The McDonald's coffee one always gets quoted in these discussions. The poor woman ended up with severe burns on her thighs and I think her clothing was fused to her skin. Plus it was shown that McDonald's knew about the issue long before the incident but didn't act.

WingBingo · 05/03/2024 14:53

The hot coffee story is actually awful.

Poor woman’s vulva melted together. The branch was reported for heating their coffee to very high temperatures many times.

MacDonalds started a campaign to highlight it as a ridiculous claim

Originally, all she wanted was her medical bills covered and they refused

LifeofBrienne · 05/03/2024 14:54

Instructions on a washing machine with a cycle for removing pet hair - not to wash your pets in the machine.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 05/03/2024 14:55

I 'ironed' my legs as a young teen. I'd ironed a dress, turned the iron off, put the dress on and noticed that I'd missed a tiny bit. Stupidly picked up the iron and there you go.

I never repeated it though, it did hurt.

Sneer away.
